There's no chip shortage for automotive industry, what's happening is that the car makers still use old technology in the engine management components and with the decrease in car sales and subsequent decrease in production due to the pandemic, the asian chip manufacturers had to turn to other sources of revenue (producing modern chips for tech companies is where the money is these days) and stopped producing those obsolete componentes that the car industry needed. When the production picked up again, the stock of obsolete chips quickly disappeared. Car makers failed to modernise their cars' ECUs and now they're paying the price.
