  1. Here in Portugal those are called "terraços" and if you're wondering why it looks a lot like the word "terraces" in English, Ian, that's because it's the direct translation. A "varanda" in Portuguese is what you call "balcony" in English. 🙂

The "terraço" in Portuguese refers to the paved space on the garden or backyard or to the flat areas on top of buildings, garages or annexes: it's called simply "terraço" when it's open and it's called "terraço fechado" when it's closed or covered. To the enclosed porches we call "marquises".
