Here in Portugal those are called "terraços" and if you're wondering why it looks a lot like the word "terraces" in English, Ian, that's because it's the direct translation. A "varanda" in Portuguese is what you call "balcony" in English. 🙂

@yadiracamacho499 - And when the balcony has no railings, what do you call it? The "terraço" in Portuguese refers to the paved space on the garden or backyard or to the flat areas on top of buildings, garages or annexes: it's called simply "terraço" when it's open and it's called "terraço fechado" when it's closed or covered. To the enclosed porches we call "marquises".

@yadiracamacho499 - Ah, ok. Then our "varanda" is your "balcón". 🙂

@toaojjc - Yep, your "terras" is exactly the same as our "terraço". It's funny, "terras" in Portuguese means "lands". 😄
