Not only they decided to go ahead with a maintenance repair on this engine, they understand that if one bearing is kaput and the other one is starting to go bad it's better to replace both, that a leaking steering rack can't be fixed in the shop and it's best to be replaced (I guess by a remanufactured one, we shall see in the next video) but also that if the front tires are not ok and the rears are still good, why not swap them instead of spending money on new ones?

  29. Portuguese here. You're confusing two things, Ian: tap water and bottled water. Only bottled water is paid, tap water is always free. Do they give bottled water for free in the US? Many people here go to a coffee shop or a bakery to have a coffee and a glass of water and that water is always free. However, only the bottled water that comes in closed containers is paid: there's a restaurant where I go 3 times a week for lunch in my city that has a machine to filter and better the tap water, so when I ask for water they bring me a glass bottle with a cap (that's supplied by the same company that supplies the machine) filled with water from that machine and that water is free. Those types of machines are everywhere, even in our Parliament.

Plus, their videos are short and you can watch them without skipping around. They're usually the first responders in emergency scenarios. 2:28 - The red ambulances belong to the Fire Departments, in this case the Ajuda FD (Ajuda is one of Lisbon's neighbourhoods). 6:13 -That's a Yamaha XJ 900. 🙂 6:48 - The INEM station wagon following the ambulance is called Resuscitation and Emercency Medical Vehicle (VMER in Portuguese) and its purpose is to quickly carry a medical team to the location where the patient is, for 1st aid, CPR or to stabilise the patient before the ambulance arrives. 7:10 - That's a tow truck from the Municipal Police, not the normal tow truck used for vehicle recovery (which are flat bed trucks here in Portugal). 😉 There's another channel called rescue911.eu that has compilations of videos with lots of different emergency vehicles filmed in the Porto area. They're around 5 mins long, so no need to skip around. 🙂

I was taught how to drive in a car with no power steering, a heavy clutch and bad brakes but I never failed parking at first attempt (it helped that I had the best instructor in the school). Every car that I drove in the last 36 years didn't have parking sensors. If they had, I would drive them crazy with the way I park. A motor was a "machine", usually powered by electricity, that provides motion directly, while an engine was a machine, usually powered by some sort of fuel (combustible or not), that provides motion indirectly, i.e by the use of many moving parts.   255. Here where I live in Portugal, the City Hall put a recycle system in place where who adheres to it receives 3 containers (one for each type of materials: paper, plastic and glass). On a designated day of the week, each person puts their respective container outside and an electric recycling truck comes in the early hours of the day and pick them up. Being electric, the trucks can circulate at those hours and not disturb anybody's sleep. 🙂 My only "gripe" with this video is the time of the day when they collect the garbage, they should do it at an hour where they wouldn't be in the way of whoever needs to go about their business. Over here, the garbage collection is between 6 and 7 AM.

  283. Yep, codfish is king at Christmas Eve dinner in most regions here in Portugal, were it not the national dish. The octopus tradition is more located in the north. We have 1001 ways of cooking codfish but for Christmas the tradition is boiled, with boiled potatoes, boiled kale and a boiled egg (some people also add boiled chickpeas). Of course, people are free to be creative and make it different but usually the dish doesn't stray away much from the tradition. The funny thing is, codfish doesn't even exist in our waters, it has to come from Norway or Iceland. We're probably the only country in the world where the national dish's main ingredient is not sourced locally. 😄

Here in Portugal, 70% of the country is like where you live in Spain, you can live well with less than 1000€ a month and "regularly" with between 500 to 600€ a month. But if you factor in the 30% left, then as a whole Portugal doesn't appear to be a cheap place to live when in reality it is.

  434. I agree with you and so does my tyre technician, I've been doing that for over 20 years based on his advice. You'd think that someone in the tyre business would be more interested in selling new tyres but he'd rather sell only two at a time (while saving the customer some money in the long run) and know that the customer is safe. As for the vehicle in the video, I'm pretty sure there has been some single tyre changes or tyre rotations along the way because it's virtually impossible for the tyres to wear that unevenly across all 4 corners.

In 2005 I got into an accident (not my fault) and the repair was doable, but the insurance company deemed it a total loss due to its age. Since it was my work car, I searched for another used one because I knew that everything I carried in the old one would fit right into the "new" one, so I found and bought the 1997 model of the same Astra F Caravan (1.4 16v, DOHC, 90hp) with only 72,000kms (~44,739mi). I sold it in 2018 with over 270,000kms (~169,013mi) and bought a 2001 Astra G Caravan 2.0 DTI (2.0 16v turbo diesel, 101hp) with only 155,000kms (~96,312mi), which I'm still driving today. 🙂

  537. 9:25 - That's the latest portuguese number plate, Ian, the two letters, two numbers, two letters without separating dots (AA 00 AA series) only started in February 2020. I call them "the bland series" because the plates are just plain ugly. The previous series had the numbers and the letters separated by black dots, and since 1998 a yellow strip on the right with the month and the year of the vehicle's first registration. Those plates looked nice but for the new series the EU forced us to remove that second strip because they argued that the LE authorities in other countries could confuse that date with the expiration date that exists in other EU countries' plates and could start pulling over portuguese vehicles for supposedly having an "expired" plate. I mean, the LE authorities in other european countries have to know what all the symbols on the various plates mean, so they could've easily learned what our date meant but since we were the only country in Europe with that and we're small, the EU "powers" forced us to remove it. The last straw was the removal of the dots for the new series but that idea came out of the "bright" minds of our "beloved" DMV. 😠 The next time you react to some portuguese vehicle-related video you'll probably see at least 3 different number plates, if not all 4 because there are still many pre-1992 cars on the roads.

Except in very specific situations where they rule over any type of vehicle, pedestrians are in no way shape or form road users, that's why designated pedestrian crossings exist. Like others have already stated, if pedestrians get hit by a vehicle because they didn't take all the precautions to cross a roadway safely, anything that happens is their responsibility. That doesn't mean that drivers are going to intentionally run over pedestrians crossing outside of the designated places, this should be obvious. Just like in Germany, drivers tend to "yield" if a pedestrian is already in the middle of the street.

For instance, the feminine of "actor" (yes, in Portuguese it's spelled exactly like in English) is "actriz" but the feminine of "embaixador" (ambassador in English) is not "embaixatriz", it's "embaixadora". "Embaixatriz" is the ambassador's wife, just like "imperador" (emperor) is masculine and "imperadora" is feminine but "imperatriz" is the emperor's wife. I think you'd have a kick watching Carwow's drag races. They race on a normal, unprepared runway (or airstrip, whichever you're more familiar with), they're wacky as hell, usually involving normal cars, SUVs, estates, bikes and supercars but also all sorts of trucks, pickups and ATVs and even race vehicles, including rally cars, rallycross cars, superbikes and even an F1 car, driven by David Coulthard. They usually do a standard 1/4 mile drag race, two 1/2 mile rolling races, one in comfort mode and one in race/sport mode and a brake test. If you like car entertainment, that's the place to go. 😀

  648. I'm one of those europeans who has to have a personal vehicle because my work involves travelling to locations where I wouldn't be able to go by PT. Plus, I have to carry all the equipment that I need for my work. However, if I need to go to a place that would take me less than 10 min by car and it doesn't involve bringing back large or heavy items, I'll walk. I do even more: my mechanics' shop is in the outskirts of my city and less than 10 min away by car but it's a 35 min walk away, nevertheless I always walk back when I leave my car there and I always walk there to get it back when it's ready. I take a "shortcut" through pleasant countryside roads with virtually no traffic and it doesn't even feel far. The only "problem" (which is only a problem when it's hot out) is that half the distance from here to there is uphill but I don't mind, it's a good workout. 🙂 The only times I use PT (train) is when I need to go to Lisbon or Porto or Coimbra or Aveiro because it's cheaper and less stressful than driving to those places.

One of the GPs (this year it was GP2) takes place here in Portugal, in a small village called Alqueidão that belongs to one of the parishes of my county, just 9 Kms (~5.6 mi) away from where I live.   909.  @tinydog34  - A simple Google search, that anyone can do, revealed US american forums talking about this matter and several US american tutorial videos showing how to replace the CAF in all generations of Ford Focus (in the 99 -> 04 models it's located under the wiper cowl and in the following models it's located behind the center console). In the Focus SVT forum it's stated that during some years Ford cheaped out on the CAFs and the cars came without it, leaving that expense to the owners. So, it's an undisputed fact that they all have at least a place to put the CAF in.

The reason behind this is that the tractors those engines come from are already limited in power and max speed, so it doesn't take much development, they just use what's already available. Very low maintenance and easy to work on. Now some manufacturers also offer electric versions. 2:55 - The main restriction, and the one that allows these things to fall into the moped category, is the sticker you saw in the back: 45km/h (~28mph). However, we all know that the manufacturers don't exactly set the limiter to that figure. 4:40 - Exactly, it's not a manual and it's not an auto, it has a moped-like CVT transmission (no forward gears). 11:20 - There's the "american" in you coming out again; I drive a car with a 2.0 turbodiesel ,101hp engine, and recently I made a 250km trip (~155mi) with 3 people and a full load, A/C on and it didn't break a sweat. Cars with engines below 200hp can handle the A/C perfectly fine. 12:25 - Some of the older, more barebones' units did have drums in the back and discs in the front but from what I've seen (they're everywhere here in Portugal) the more modern models have discs all around. 13:24 - That info is wrong. None of the microcars have 50cc engines, they would be too small for the size and weight of the vehicle. The minimum displacement is usually 500cc.

But hey, the engineers were german, I guess they knew what they were doing.

In the last two days the heatwave started to fade out a bit on the coastal areas and the highs were limited more to the interior regions. Here's the list of how many stations out of the 134 recorded temperatures above 104ºF (40ºC) in each day: July 8th: 24 July 9th: 36 July 10th: 24 July 11th: 21 July 12th: 58 July 13th: 71 July 14th: 58 July 15th: 25 July 16th: 20 July 17th: 20 The highest temperature ever recorded here is 117.1ºF (47.3ºC) on August 1st 2003, the second highest are now 116.6ºF (47ºC), one on the same day as the previous one and the other on July 14th 2022, and the 3rd highest was 116.2ºF (46.8ºC), in Central Portugal near where I live, in August 2018. One curious fact: the previous record of the station that registered the highest temperature on this heatwave (Pinhão, Douro River valley) was 114.8ºF (46ºC), registered on July 31st 1944! Not in the size department (fortunately) but in the business model (unfortunately). I live in a city that has 6 gas stations withing the city limits, 4 of them follow the gas station/convenience store model and the other 2 are only gas stations: one of them still has an attendant to fill up your vehicle and receive the payment and the other is self-service, you can either pay with a card at the pump itself or at a booth at the exit where there's an employee. Around here pretty much all the big supermarket chains (Intermarché, Continente, Pingo Doce and E. Leclerc) have a gas station associated with them (either in the parking lot of the stores or in a separate location) and prices are usually lower than in the branded gas stations like BP, Repsol, Cepsa, Galp or Prio but there's a general belief that the quality is also lower.

I'm in the right, the ones driving in the middle or left lanes are in the wrong. 2) The definition of overtaking states that it implies switching lanes to carry out that manoeuvre, so in a situation like the one in the video I wouldn't be overtaking anyone because I'm not switching lanes and therefore I'm not breaking the "No Overtaking On The Right" rule. If I was behind that white car and used the empty right lane to overtake it, then I'd be breaking the law. The way it's written, complying with our "No Overtaking On The Right" rule (meaning everyone had to switch two or three lanes to the left to overtake the idiots "planted" in the middle lane for kms and kms) just creates far more dangerous situations and disruption to the traffic flow than complying with the "Keep Right" rule and follow the definition of overtaking. 14:00 - "Annoying" is an understatement, Ian.
