I know what it should be; 1) Jail for criminals who burglarize, vandalize and assault 2) mental health evals & commitment for the mentally ill 3) mandatory drug rehab for the addicted. Extended incarceration for those that reoffend, relapse, or refuse to take their meds. Work crews to keep them busy, and help clean the filth they spread in every city. The major problem with this idea? It takes TAXES to implement. The volunteer programs you speak of only want the donations, they have no incentive to solve the problem. What do you think?

  51. The homeless, drug addictions &mental health problems are a NATIONAL ISSUE, and as such, should be addressed and funded from the federal government, not on local property owners taxes. That’s where Seattle has failed miserably. By TRYING to provide free beds, food, medical, needles, etc, to the chronically homeless, Seattle is drawing them from all over the country. These ppl are NOT Seattle natives. SCC has created a worse problem, and home owners can’t fund this mess.

  53. Did you read about Victory Creek Park? The salmon spawning creek NE of QFCs parking lot on NE Roosevelt & Northgate Way? A couple yrs ago, City of Seattle spent $11 MILLION to clean the creek & plant trees. In less than 6 mos, it’s been ruined by encampments, homeless defecating, needles, loud partying, etc. the neighbors are under siege with NO NAVIGATION team and no help in sight. Way to go Seattle...

  61. @John Linares police don’t know how to handle mental health crisis, period. They don’t have the training, or the inclination to deal with people that are mentally ill. They reach for theirs guns first. What do we do with the mentally ill? Who babysits them to make sure they’re taking their meds? How do you prevent them from being a danger to you & me or themselves? Do you think mental health professionals would have been better equipped to deal with someone as large as Tony Timpa? Is our society a safer place now that Ronald Reagan closed most psych wards & released mentally ill patients in the 80s to cut taxes for the super wealthy? Lots of questions.
