She tapped into the fact that scared and stupid people are malleable and easy to fleece money from. Trump saw this, understood that Palin is a moron. He moved right in, regardless of how stupid people think he is, Trump knows how to navigate the media. So he "moved on it like a bitch". Trump took the radicalized Tea Party movement and built it into either a cult or an empire, depending on who you ask. It was masterfully done. Hideous...but masterfully done.
