I think you are putting the things out of order here, you can't separate what people do on their spare time to who they are, if he's so smart right now is just because he explored a lot of ideas, because had such a creativity and used it, it is just natural to do things in this way. As for the 'PhD' part, humanity would not benefit from it, departments dictated by bureaucracy don't advance the humanity much more than some random guys in the world that are really trying to discover interesting new things.

  3. Not really, this is how a computer CPU works (not exactly, but you got the idea), VM's are actually an much more abstractive layer inside CPU's.
