  1. OK, it's Germany. I can understand that. I lived there as an expat and was lucky to be able to escape to Switzerland where I am now. Side note: I am a doctor and I had a German medical license. Now practicing medicine in Switzerland earning way more money and paying less taxes than in Germany.

There was a study done by the IRS not more than 2 years ago and it shows that it's precisely the "average" citizens who are renouncing because of the administrative hassle, discrimination, etc. They're not UHNI, just normal employees who happen to be expats. It showed that the incidence of renunciation is directly correlated with the length of time that a person has lived outside of the USA.

  13. You can get permanent residency an another country basically for free. It just takes time. In my case, I got permanent residency in Switzerland after working there for 5 years. Obviously, if you want to go the Citizenship or Residency by investment route, that's going to cost a bunch of money, but that's not Andrew's fault.

  14. You have to get a driver's license where you reside. In some places, like Germany, you can simply exchange your state Driver's license for a German license, but not all 50 states have this type of agreement with Germany. In my case, I had exchanged my Texas DL for a German license and then when I moved to Switzerland, I exchanged the German license for a Swiss one without need for testing, etc.

  15. I ended up leaving Germany, partly because they wouldn't recognize all of my medical specialist qualifications (from the USA) with heaps of documentation! But it was a blessing in disguise because now I'm a permanent resident in low-tax Switzerland and I love it. Germany is absolutely ridiculous.

I got recruited to go there and I get offers all the time with folks trying to get me to go back. I can only speak for myself, but my income in Switzerland has steadily increased over the past 6 years (and there's a massive physician shortage here as well). A lot of it is due to the constantly increasing workload. If wages start stagnating or even decreasing doctors will start quitting, working part-time or retiring.

I am a native Texan and I was living in South Carolina before moving to Germany this last time (l've had a few stints in Germany) before relocating to Switzerland (been here 7 years straight now). Anyway, if you don't think that moving from Germany to Switzerland isn't a major move, then go and watch any of the myriad of videos from German expats in Switzerland. It's a huge life change - different culture, different language, different working conditions, different healthcare system, etc. Some of them can't hack it and end up going back to Germany.

I had found out that many people were retiring to Italy, Spain and Germany and there were also DoD civilians who had been living and working in Europe for years, enjoying the lifestyle, so I thought "this is an option!" The proposed "billionaire" tax on unrealized capital gains would apply to those with net worth of $100 million or more. Hm, 100 million is only a tenth of a billion, so don't you think that the next invention will be a "millionaire tax" that applies to people with a net worth of 100k... look out!

  61.  @jeffb.140  Based on my experience in Germany, patients need to be referred to specialist much more often, but that costs money, so they are left to rot with the Hausärzte. Quality care costs money and that's not something you're going to get under the socialized system in Germany (unless you're privately insured). On the other hand, the system is completely different in Switzerland, it costs more for the patients, but they actually get something for the money and the doctors are more fairly reimbursed for their services.

The machines, equipment, software, reagents, antibodies, supplies and experienced personnel are not cheap, no matter how much people want folks to believe that these "low healthcare cost" countries have some kind of special magic sauce. Places like Germany and England keep costs "low" by paying healthcare professionals diddley squat and by severely limiting access to services and having a limited menu of services available. That's why there's so many German doctors in Switzerland. And if I can't afford to purchase a Mercedes Benz on my salary as a Board-certified medical doctor, then I'm going to quit. To give you some perspective, the type of "regular" light microscope that I use on a daily basis is around 40k -60k USD. And that's just one piece of equipment.

Luckily, I understood many years ago that most people (even "close" relatives) don't give a hoot about what you're doing or how you're getting along the minute you move to another city or state that's mere hours away. Out of sight, out of mind. It will be up to you to maintain contact because you are the one who "left". But, if your dream is to try life somewhere else, I would advise you to not hold back, because people who truly care about you will maintain a relationship with you, and you shouldn't shape your life around the opinions of the rest.

Certain portions of your income are not taxable (housing allowance, BAS (groceries), you can shop tax free for absolutely everything, medical and dental and optical are 100% free, fancy fitness centers are free, golf is extraordinarily cheap, the movie theater is free and on and on.... And then you get all the VA benefits when you get out.

But the subject matter of the video is not concerning Americans who take the occasional road road trip as a tourist through Western European countries, this is about Americans who live full time in foreign countries and work, own property or have a business in those countries. Having US citizenship is good if you live in the US, but it's a disaster for those who don't live in the US. It makes normal life impossible. Sure, the US is the best in some areas, but for overall quality of life and raising children in a safe environment, I'm never leaving Switzerland.

  123. It depends on where you live. I have a big (100+ sq m) apartment in Switzerland with a fireplace, lake view, and remodeled kitchen and bathroom and I pay only $1,800/mo. AND its close enough to my work, that I can take my bike. Get the heck out of Geneva if you don't like the prices, it's really as simple as that. You can live a great life on 6k/month in Switzerland if you understand some things.

Even with a high income, I'm just in the 20% tax bracket, and take all deductions possible, so the tax burden is actually quite low and that's how people can afford to live in Switzerland. A normal Pizza around where I live is around $15. (and CHF 15 is the max daily amount that a worker can deduct per day for lunches away from home! 👍👷‍♀️)

I even got a significant signing bonus. I had maintained my US medical licenses, so obviously that helps. It just depends.

Not that it's your business, but his father is from Europe and comes from a country bordering Switzerland. We are international, but that's besides the point. I don't make my life decisions based on what "extended family" thinks. I do what's best for me. My son loves it here and he's lived here longer than anywhere else. If extended family wants to see us, they can definitely come and visit and some of them do.

In general, no matter where I visit or live, people don't label me as American and they are always surprised to find out that I'm a native Texan. In Switzerland, I've gotten asked if I'm from Brazil or South Africa in addition to Germany and Austria. Or, when I was in Egypt, people thought I was Greek and when I was in Greece, they thought I was Egyptian. When I worked in the Caribbean, people assumed that I was a Caribbean native who had been gone a while but returned, faking an American accent. But, I have an ambiguous look working for me and that makes assimilation easy. Honestly, the only giveaway that I'm American is my passport. Your results may vary!

Don't forget that the US has an all-volunteer military and they have to make pay and benefits very attractive to convince folks to choose military service over the private sector. The VA was established by Abraham Lincoln and is the second -largest federal agency behind the department of defense. And to top it off, you don't need to even be a US citizen to serve (as enlisted) and therefore you don't need to be a citizen to collect Veterans' benefits. Likewise, you don't need to be a citizen to earn and collect Social security benefits. So, it wouldn't make any sense or have any utility to say that people who are no longer citizens will be denied VA or social security Benefits because many people who are not (and never were) citizens already receive those benefits. Also, a major point is that military pensions come from the DoD and not the VA, so different rules apply, apparently.

What I keep hearing is that for US citizens living abroad, eventually, "all roads lead to renunciation". When you weigh all the options, there just isn't any real advantage to keeping US citizenship, especially for people who have been gone for years and have no intentions of going back.

Similarly, many years later, I had an appointment for an MRI in Germany and I had to wait at least 3 hours because there was an accident and the injured people needed imaging. That's how it goes. Clearly, you were fine, since you got up and left. Your good health is a blessing. 😃 P.S. I stated earlier and I will repeat that no other country comes close to the quality of medical education and health care advancements as the USA - not anywhere in Asia, not Europe, nobody. I just don't currently work there.

It's a whole different world out there which you will see when you finally leave.

I recently saw a study that the IRS did on this very subject and they came to the conclusion that the bulk of renunciations are an "unintended consequence" of the draconian regulations that they keep piling onto law-abiding, taxpaying citizens....They lose taxpayers in the end and don't actually catch any actual tax-evaders or money launderers.
