You do realize that us citizenship is not a requirement for social security benefits? Plenty of people from foreign countries work in the US on a visa and pay into and are eligible for benefits.

It's predominantly regular people, particularly "accidental Americans".

@karafez394 You do not lose social security.
5
If you live in another country permanently, a US passport is a huge liability.
4
You will lose retirement, but all VA benefits are yours forever.
4
@JM-gj7de They can't take VA benefits away. You've been misinformed.

@hanna0322 Nobody has issue with your traveling experiences. But the subject matter of the video is not concerning Americans who take the occasional road road trip as a tourist through Western European countries, this is about Americans who live full time in foreign countries and work, own property or have a business in those countries. Having US citizenship is good if you live in the US, but it's a disaster for those who don't live in the US. It makes normal life impossible. Sure, the US is the best in some areas, but for overall quality of life and raising children in a safe environment, I'm never leaving Switzerland.

We're already here. Been occupying Europe since WW2.
3
That's correct.

@hanna0322 You'll wait for 5 hours in the US if you don't have an emergency - I know because I practiced medicine in the US. 😅 Sheesh. However, the US does have the world's best medical education and advanced healthcare technologies and innovations. No other countries come close (I've worked in Germany and Switzerland, for reference)

Yes. Social security is not tied to nationality.

@MrCPPG Then no one would serve if there's a chance that benefits could be cancelled at will. I know that I wouldn't have. Don't forget that the US has an all-volunteer military and they have to make pay and benefits very attractive to convince folks to choose military service over the private sector. The VA was established by Abraham Lincoln and is the second -largest federal agency behind the department of defense. And to top it off, you don't need to even be a US citizen to serve (as enlisted) and therefore you don't need to be a citizen to collect Veterans' benefits. Likewise, you don't need to be a citizen to earn and collect Social security benefits. So, it wouldn't make any sense or have any utility to say that people who are no longer citizens will be denied VA or social security Benefits because many people who are not (and never were) citizens already receive those benefits. Also, a major point is that military pensions come from the DoD and not the VA, so different rules apply, apparently.

@ellieramseyer The lists of renunciations are published. Thousands do it every year and it would be more but the government creates "waiting lists".
1
@SenorJuan2023 Eh, a car is needed in Europe if you don't live in an urban area.

@hanna0322 I actually had a scheduled appointment with an orthopedic surgeon in Houston and had to wait almost a whole afternoon because something urgent happened that the doctor had to attend to immediately. Similarly, many years later, I had an appointment for an MRI in Germany and I had to wait at least 3 hours because there was an accident and the injured people needed imaging. That's how it goes. Clearly, you were fine, since you got up and left. Your good health is a blessing. 😃 P.S. I stated earlier and I will repeat that no other country comes close to the quality of medical education and health care advancements as the USA - not anywhere in Asia, not Europe, nobody. I just don't currently work there.

It's easier to naturalize than to renounce.

@crescentprincekronos2518 Exit tax is only for covered expats.
1
Renunciation will not exclude you from social security. That's a myth. And the exit tax is only for covered expats (those with a net worth over 2 million).

@georgecooksey8216 all countries have a constitution.

@malcolmnicoll1165 I believe that Medicare is only available for people residing in the US.
