  2. Sharpness is just one factor. There is also edge durability, toughness and geometry, which are at least as important as initial sharpness.

  3. My favorites are the Spydercos, though there are many good knives. They performed best (usually) or next to best in every category, out of 10 knives. That is pretty spectacular performance. Spyderco is particularly good with blade steels, and uses a lot of different ones, in the PM2/Para 3 lines in particular. It would be useful to know what all the steels in these knives were.

  5. The cheaper a knife is, up to a point, the better a value it will be. Almost anything with an edge will get the job done, but that last 10%, and especially 1% that is possible is not exactly cost effective! As far as function goes, any $100 knife is as much as 99% or even 100% as good as almost any $1000 knife! In other words, for utility, no need to spend more than $100, or even $50.
