Mefepristone may or may not have completed clinical safety trials, but even if it didn’t, 20+ years of common usage have proven that it is safe. In the FDA approval of drugs, Mefepristone would not be the first that skipped some clinical trials. Some are skipped because of urgent need, to be completed later (as in this case, usage often provides the answer that a trial would have provided). Others are skipped because of desperate need, and a dearth of alternatives. Still others were never tested, because they were in common use before regulations were enacted. In all those cases, practice had demonstrated a high degree of safety, and in most cases, the use of those drugs has been permitted to stand, based upon that experience…
