  2. I’m so glad to hear that she is doing well! So her face was mostly (or completely) spared? The scars, where she was burned, must be terrible. The most important thing might be the trauma. What effect does something like that have on a person. I wish her the best in life, after this terrible setback, and that she can come completely to terms with it. I hope she achieves all of her goals in life, and is, above all, happy!

  4.  @faith5563  Yes, pretty sure. I any case somebody who knows the case much more intimately than I will make the decision, not me. Europe is, generally speaking, much less punitive than the US, and yet, it has less crime. There must be a lesson in that! What I’m saying is that Betty is clearly insane, by some cause or other. Is she culpable? I’m not sure, but I for one am not in favor of treating people with very real mental illnesses like criminals, per se. They may in fact be criminals, but being insane is a gigantic extenuating factor.

  5. Most murderers never intended to be involved in murder. They kept bad company, gangs being the perfect example. It must be difficult to grow up poor in a neighborhood ruled by gangs without getting involved with them… In fact, one might argue that it is inevitable! How can you blame a 12yo kid for something you know to be inevitable? A situation ADULTS put him in? We should not make kids the scapegoats for what adults, including their parents, made them.

  6. Betty WAS insane. Despite the severity of her crime, she should have been sentenced to a hospital, a secure hospital to be sure, which could treat her illness. If she improves, she might some day be released, but not, I would not think, before she had spent a long time in therapy, the alternative to prison. Until she improves quite a bit, she is a danger to society.
