  2. My first “experience” of 911s was my older brother telling me about his friend who graduated college with him. This friend was a business major who thought the first thing to do was buy a Porsche! This was in 1964, I was 12, and the Porsche was a 911. I don’t know much else, but that he liked the car, a lot! That kind of turned me on to cars, and the nicer tools in particular (no Porsches yet)!

  3. I can see why you’d want the HEATING features of the Si, given where you live. I’m not saying that southern Canada is nothing but cold (as some people seem to think), by any means, but I did visit Montreal once, when it was -30 degrees Fahrenheit! It was COLD! Fortunately, the next day the temperature rose to about 30 degrees… 60 degrees warmer.

  9. I had a 1999 5-speed MT 4Runner, 4WD with rear lockers for 15 years and 120K miles, and I loved her. I considered her to be an unusually useful sports car. She was simple and straightforward and a joy to drive! New England rust finally claimed her, but as recently as 4 mos. ago, I took her on a 1K mile trip. There was never any worry about reliability, right up until a couple of expensive mechanical issues cropped up. If not for the rust, I would have fixed her, but I did do the next best thing. I sold her to an enthusiast who planned to rebuild her. He says he has done 10 of them, so it looks like my old companion will live again!

  10. It may be quite a bit more dangerous than a modern car, but you can get killed in any car, and besides, you don’t intend to crack it up! You have the power to drive extra-safely. And if you do have an accident, despite all efforts to prevent it, that’s life. Or death. You cannot live in fear!

  11. Cars are MEANT to be wound out, including the very expensive ones that would cost a fortune to repair if they ever broke! In fact, some of them NEED to be wound out on occasion, just to stay healthy!

  12. That nice “connection to the powertrain” is what MTs gave us. You had to be in tune with the engine and the road to drive a MT properly. It is what kept most of us engaged, which is not only fun, but it’s a safety issue! This Panamera is a wonderful vehicle, but that is largely because it has a lot of power (also a fine vehicle in general of course). I would be OK with an automatic, only if it has a powerful motor! Power makes up for a lot! I also hate the new big-grill BMWs (and I do drive a BMW, from the opposite end of the price range), which are, IMHO, UGLY.

  14. “Slamming it in,” with reference to shifting a MT, will only break it, or wear it out! I always try to give a car what it needs… One of my earliest cars was a stroker Saab 95, with a very delicate MT on the column, so I learned to shift with 2 fingers. I still try, as much as possible, not to force anything…

  17. I bought a BMW 5 years ago, with much trepidation, because of rumors of poor reliability and expensive repairs. Well, I have driven her (a 2013 128i) 50K miles, and haven’t spent $1000 on mechanical repairs (the coils once, and one coil one other time, plus the oil filler housing gasket. That’s it, besides routine maintenance). The 60K service is coming up, and that will cost a bit, but the car has been a joy. Worth every penny! And if their reputation is accurate, Porsches are even more reliable. Expensive sports/luxury cars tend to be very good quality. They cost a bit when they DO break, but they don’t break that often. I was afraid I would regret buying my Bimmer, but I don’t! Glad if you have a similar experience!

  18. I WOULD buy one if I could afford one, and I am not poor (I own 4 cars, including a very nice, late model BMW and a mint antique roadster, etc.). This electric car, and most other electrics as well, is outside my price range.

  21. An old friend of mine illustrated the biggest problem, after the cost, of driving an expensive car… people treat you differently! He bought a Ferrari, and he didn’t like it, because people started treating him “differently.” Poor people no longer spoke to him, except sometimes about the car, and rich people thought he was a poser, because his was the “cheap” Ferrari!”

  22. If you want to know DEEP NH car culture, check out an old Saab! They used to be one of the most common cars in NH… because they were FWD and handled well in snow. I’ve had several, and there is nothing else like them!

  25. It seems unlikely that he was speeding. If he had been, he would have violated the break-in requirements for the engine, and he would have lost his entourage. I don’t offhand know what eye-witness accounts said, but it’s likely that JD was NOT speeding, or otherwise driving recklessly.

  26. I have an old 4Runner (with MT, which I love), for which I bought a set of Michelins about 5 years ago, and ever since new, one of them needs air every month or two. I had it checked for leaks, and none was found! Yet it still leaks air. I DO have to check once in a while, for a low lire…

  27.  @6942O-n6n It’s not? Nothing is perfect. Toyota’s problem is enviable. It is so good, that the moment they make a single lemon, or two, apparently, every body is in a panic! Cars are complex, so however good their QC must be, sometimes something slips through the cracks. The ultimate test is that it doesn’t happen often and the company stands behind you. The bottom line is the customer must get what he just paid $60K+ for. In the case of Toyota, it must be very much worth the dealer’s effort, even if it costs them sometimes, to make sure that every customer gets what they paid for.

My first choice would be an AC (Shelby) Cobra, original (not a chance) or high-quality replica. Among replicars, this one is next. It looks very much like the original, with some of the performance of the original (don’t know how they compare, but it’s possible that the replicar’s better) thrown in!

  40. You can feel for and operate a physical switch or knob without taking your eyes off the road, whereas a touch-screen REQUIRES that you take your eyes off the road! It’s as bad as texting on a cell phone!

In most cases, a knob or two could do everything WITHOUT taking your eyes from the road! We can think of them as the latest innovations, for convenience and safety, the switch, the knob and the (physical) button.

  42. It takes a discerning driver to fully appreciate low horsepower! I have what turns out to be the fastest production, naturally aspirated, 6-cylinder BMW ever built in my garage, yet despite the BMW being a beautiful car, I prefer my Miata most of the time (especially on 2° roads). Just as there are other, finer values than money, there are other, finer values than horsepower! Low horsepower allows us to drive our cars hard, without getting killed or arrested! It allows us to concentrate on shifting and handling, rather than just hanging on! It permits us to enjoy the scenery better as well. The arguments for low hp are numerous. I have just scratched the surface!

  52. Electric cars have a different “feel, sound and experience,” but in their own way, they are just as remarkable as that Viper motor… The V-10 is a great motor… to motorheads. To others, it’s a dangerous gas-guzzler! I absolutely appreciate that motor, and the car that it’s in, but truth be told, the Viper is a dinosaur. Electrics are the wave of the future.

  53. I had a CVCC Civic a long time ago, and I got the impression, at the time, that Hondas were not that much fun to drive. Furthermore, my copy, which I believe was abused by the former owner, had its engine fail at 80K, so I wasn’t very impressed. I’ll give them another chance, maybe, when I’m done with my BMW 128i coupe (6-speed, no iDrive, 18” wheels, leather and metallic paint, nothing else), which in 5 years and 50K miles, has been cheaper than any hot Honda would be… The Honda might be the better car, in the final analysis, but the BMW is without a doubt, beautiful.

  56.  @fabriziob899  I ALWAYS thought that that little 6 cylinder FERRARI motor was a PARTICULARLY fine gem, unlike anything else Ferrari has built for decades, and the body of the Dino was to DIE FOR! It’s a fact, the Dino, including the Fiat Dino which had the same engine, were my dream cars. Speed isn’t everything, though the Dino was/is plenty fast, beauty and charm also count for a lot!

  60. My BMW has 240HP, and it gets about 21mpg (and is no doubt faster than the Merc). That big V8 should be making 300-400HP, and still get 12mpg! I guess Mercedes wasn’t too concerned with gas mileage OR power when gas cost $1.50/gallon…

  63. You can’t go more than 50mph on the highway? I always thought they were faster than that! They are, basically, souped up VWs. They have many of the same issues, especially handling, due to the rear-mounted engine. Although quicker than VWs, they weren’t fast, by modern standards. They did make some twin-cam models that were faster, but also hard to tune and fragile, according to my limited knowledge. Always wanted one, but now that I might finally afford one, they are way outside my price range!

  88. I have ALWAYS, for about 10-12 years at least, believed that. I had a Miata for 11 years, but felt I needed something more practical, so I got a GREAT old Toyota 4Runner (sold the ‘94 Miata). She has 4WD of course, buy also a 5-speed transmission, rear differential lock, etc. With the MT, I feel like I’m driving a sports car every minute! My sports cars (a 2013 BMW 128i and a 1997 Mazda Miata) are faster and handle better, but within its limits, the 4Runner is FINE! I must say, I enjoy driving the 4Runner about as much as I enjoy the other cars. If I had to choose just one of them to keep forever, it might be the 4Runner…

  89. The only trouble with using it as an off-roader must be that it’s an old, expensive car, meaning parts, especially body parts may be scarce. I have seen that off-road vehicles get banged up, sometimes pretty bad. I don’t think you’d want to wreck this!

  90. Within my memory, 356s were not expensive. When I was 16 (1966), I could have bought a running 1956 Porsche with an aluminum body, for $800! Later, I was aware I could buy a good 356 for as little as $10K-$12K! This Speedster is rarer and more desirable, but although I haven’t checked, I don’t think you can get much in the way of 356s today for less than 6 figures.. which unfortunately puts it out of my price range! Luckily I guess, there are still plenty of other good sports cars available for much less!

  91. I have a ‘97 M-edition, and I love her! She had 40K on her clock 3 years ago, now 55K, and I don’t drive her in winter! She is, of course, everything I really want in a car. I remember when I got my first, a black ’94 with roll-up windows (drove her 120K miles), 22 years ago now. I was in heaven for a solid 6 mos., and have been elevated ever since! I had her 11 years, then I went 8 years without one, before I got the ‘97. I don’t intend to be without a Miata/MX-5 ever again! I have, BTW, driven the Million Dollar Highway (which I think you’re on here) as well as the California Coast Highway (and quite a few others!) in one Miata or the other!

There are almost UNLIMITED TWISTIES up there! Yup, had her for 11 years out there, drove her 120K miles. Now, 11 years later (2 years ago, when I was on my death bed), I bought another one, a ‘97 M-edition in metallic green and tan leather, mint with 40K on the clock, and I’ve been driving her ever since (never in winter). I’m looking forward to at least another 11 years, this time in New England!

  102. Is it HONDAS which are so spacious? We have a 4Runner and a Honda CRV. We used to always use the 4Runner to go to the transfer station (recycling, dump), and we usually filled it up. Well, recently the 4Runner was in the shop, so we used the CRV, and guess what? It all fit, easily! The CRV does in fact fill in for a medium sized SUV!

  106. I have a GLK350, which is at least DISTINCTIVE! With its unusually boxy, upright design (for a contemporary Merc), it has a little more utilitarian in it, which I like. It also has that big 6, which gives it more than adequate oomph! If it had a MT, it would be perfect! I do happen to think it looks pretty good.

I only know their reputations (I own a 128i, which is terrific), but I think most of the turbocharged 4s are problematic mechanically, i.e. not without issues, whereas this one, which should have the (turbocharged) 3L 6, is much more reliable (and also faster). I believe the same car and engine are available in the X3 as the naturally aspirated 28i, which should be even more reliable. I am looking at getting one myself.

  117. My driver is a mint 1997 Mazda Miata, M-edition, which is a very satisfying little sports car. My price-is-no-object DREAM car was the Ferrari Dino $600K (or a Shelby Cobra $2M). My REALISTIC dream car would be a Porsche Cayman or Boxter (not the 911, not that there’s anything wrong with those). There are no other Ferraris I really lust for.

  120. One thing I truly love about this car, along with everything else, is its expected reliability. No matter how good it is otherwise, breaking down, or wearing out prematurely spoils my fun! There’s no reason any modern road car should be unreliable. Now, one might expect a British, small label exotic car to be unreliable, but, I THINK, this one is better. With that engine, it should run a long time.

  130. I have always wondered, how does one operate a touch screen without taking your eyes off the road? You can reach for a button or a knob, and operate it by feel, but a touch screen? You need your eyes on it, sometimes for much too long.

  142.  @rustbeltrobclassic2512 Like they say, it can be more fun to drive a slow car fast, than a fast car slow… and since slow cars are usually cheaper than fast ones… The Beck Spyder is way cheaper than a real Porsche Spyder, but it’s not THAT cheap, or I’d probably be driving one!

  143. Not that long ago, you could buy a Ferrari for less than that! You still can (pre-owned)! An Ariel would be a lot easier to keep, if not to live with! It’s a real sports car, is it not?

  145. Not to denigrate a VW powered Spyder, there is also a Subaru-powered version version that is significantly more powerful… Am not sure which is better, but the Subaru version IS Japanese, which is seldom a bad thing!

  147. I’m kind of wondering, why is the clutch so stiff, and why is the engine so hard to start? Is that motor highly built? If it were me, it would be mostly stock, which should be plenty fast, be easy to start, be easy on the left leg, and have plenty of power for that chassis! I wouldn’t want to have to struggle to get it started! But I would LOVE to drive it, if it were easy to start.

  157. I’ve always been a believer in low HP, high fun! My first cars were stroker Saabs, which had a 4-speed and I think 46HP! I currently have a Miata with 133HP, and a car can’t be MUCH more fun! That 133HP is PLENTY to have fun with in a tiny roadster!

  158. I worried, a little, when I was 30, about getting older, but try 70! I never thought it would happen, but I got old! I was still young, until about 5 years ago. I could do anything I could ever do. Now I can’t run. I can’t even ride a bike, so now I hike, moderately, in the local conservation areas. And I paddle one of my canoes. I can still handle the little ones alone! And yes, I also go for drives. I have several sporty cars, which I very much enjoy driving! I am happy doing the little things, now that I have no other choice!

  159. My BMW starts every time, too, and furthermore, it has not only never broken down in 50K miles, it hasn’t cost much in repairs, either (a set of coils, the oil filler gasket, that’s it). I bought it at 11K for $22,750, and feel like I got a pretty good deal!

  165. Never had any other kind, and I’ve had 2, both NAs, the first for 11 years, and recently another for 3 more. Miatas are just about perfect as they are. They could use more motor, but even that is fine. I LIKE rowing gears. By stock I mean I have not modified the motor in any way. My first did eventually get new Katskins, extra-plush carpets and a new Robbins top with heated glass, but I considered those to be maintenance! Both had and have new Koni Sport adjustables. Otherwise they were/are completely stock.

  166. No seat belts or side bolstering, in other words, a truly vintage driving experience! It’s a rare car that never had seat belts, and so doesn’t require them… savor it!
