That “bag moth” is actually a Caddis fly larva, which is aquatic insect, which is the model for a lot of dry fishing flies… Yes, they build little shelters for themselves, out of sticks, stones and other detritus, bound together with silk, species specific (each species builds a different shelter), which help protect them from predation. The larvae live underwater over winter (where they do all of their feeding), and emerge into the air (where they do all of their breeding) as flying adults in Spring. Everybody has seen them, even if they didn’t know what they were.
