  2. I had never heard of the Drake Equasion before but I am glad to know there is an official name for something that I have always realised. Whenever someone I'm talking to tries to convince me that there "must be thousands of civilisations out there" I remind them that if we are somewhere in the middle of a universe that has existed for 13 billion years and might exist for 13 billion more then the five hundred years between us discovering electricity and eventually wiping ourselves out would appear no larger than a speck of dust near the middle of a mile-long length of rope. I don't believe life will be unique to our solar system but I do believe that most other intelligent civilisations are either long dead or they have not yet emerged from their primordial soup, because the likelihood of them reaching their technological apex at the same time as us would be astronomical. Pun intended.
