Without analogies we Brits would have to adopt either the metric or imperial system as we currently use a system where the double-decker bus, the football pitch and the country of Wales are all accepted units of measurement.

There is cold fusion, he described one at the end using muon capture.

You have to put something behind you.

The thing is that you generate electricity by pushing electrons and so a coil wound around a rotor that is being spun by another force is still the easiest way to do that. Farraday used his hand, we use whatever fluid is at hand - water, wind or steam. It's less efficient than pumping electrons using a chemical reaction but it's a million times easier to accomplish so the inefficiency is forgiven, especially when the fluids in question are usually natural and abundant.

It's the tangent cam that does it for me.

@Muckytuja The problem is that follow on technology from fossil fuels might not be as lucrative. The big thing about fusion is that the fuel for it is water and oil companies can monopolise something that's 200 metres under the ground but not something that is in every stream and lake and river. Cold fusion or hot fusion or even a breakthrough in fission that brought nuclear power plants back into vogue would all do huge harm to the big 6 oil companies that fuel the world.

"I need three men to enter my basement and pump out the water in there... I.. I dropped a hot pocket on the floor and it's starting to eat through the linoleum.."

It was that debacle in 1989 that made Cold Fusion a household name in the 90's and we eventually got movies like Chain Reaction and The Saint out of it.
