Grey goo would be the scenario of nanites taking over the world, the idea that they would assume human form is just arrogance on our part.

I don't see how that is an understatement. He said 'various' and there are several trials going on...

We already walk around on spongy surfaces though since we need to cushion our footfalls to avoid damaging our feet and wearing out the floor, the former is solved by our padded feet and padded footwear and the latter by floor coverings like carpet or linoleum. Also energy-providing surfaces are not noticeably spongy so they would be imperceptible from a regular floor covering.

That's a lesson about programming limitations into any automated machine you create. Reminds me of a thought experiment I heard from a machine learning expert about what would happen if you created a robot and tasked it with collecting baseball cards, a machine that has not been given precise instructions and limitations would realise that the cards are finite and would start producing them in enormous numbers from all other matter until there was nothing left to convert. Eventually the Earth would be a barren wasteland covered entirely 100 foot deep in baseball cards.

And then eventually grey goo.

To be fair that children's toy was constructed by the most advanced android ever conceived, creating an android and not teaching it right from wrong was the major faux pas there.
