The most important in a perfect world, if you spared men while your opponent didn't then they would win by attrition since you can replace materials a lot easier than you can replace an experienced veteran. That rule was commonplace in WW1, intermittent in WW2 and if there is a WW3 it is likely the rule would be "kill the man, spare the machine".
