  2. In the majority of collisions where the perpetrator is drunk or high they often survive, but when the perpetrator is sober they have no more or less chance of surviving than anyone else. The reason intoxicated people are more likely to survive collisions is because their impaired reactions mean they are unlikely to "brace for impact" in time and it is bracing for impact that causes bones to snap and arteries to tear in high speed collisions. If you're going to crash at 30mph then tensing your body can have benefits such as not smashing your face in to the person in front of you, but if you're going to crash at 60mph your best bet is to go limp and hope for the best, because tensing up your muscles at a time when you really need your body to be bendy and pliable can cause horrendous internal injuries.
