"We're going down by the head." "This is no time for humour, Dieter!"

Shome thingsh in here don't react well to bulletsh.

Destroyers had very little armour, they were small, fast hunters designed to hound submarines to death or launch a torpedo at any target of opportunity. Battleships were at the opposite end of the spectrum with nothing but heavy armour and heavier guns making them bulky and slow while cruisers were somewhere in the middle, decent armour, decent guns, decent speed - the jack of all trades, master of none.

@MrWATCHthisWAY White noise.. oh how I miss white noise. Waking up at 3am to see and hear that hissing snow, it was actually soothing at times.

Sonic screws, invented by the Timelords.

To be fair the leader of the free world called Wales, Whales. And I believe his daughter refered to our country as a whole as the United Kingston. A real special relationship we have there...
3
@LilyAmongThorns It saddens me that ignorant people like you still exist in a world where everybody now has access to the world's largest library and knowledge base on their phone.

They store all their waste in vast man-made lakes at a place called Mayak near the town of Kyshtym, if either of those two names ring a bell it's because there was a disaster there in 1957 when a spent fuel pool dried up and exploded. It was the largest nuclear accident until Chernobyl.

@dancolley4208 In the UK a frankencar is known as a "cut n' shut" and are not road legal, if done incorrectly they can come apart at a very inopportune time.
2
@hedydd2 It's also quite unwise to piss on someone's bonfire as it makes the rest of us Brits look like c*nts.
2
He's not a policeman, he's a very naughty boy.
2
St Andrew's Day was quite a thing with Americans of Scottish heritage, that is until McCarthy and Hoover found out he's also the patron saint of Russia and stamped it out.
2
National defence computers getting it wrong were a thing in science fiction long before 1979. The movie "Colossus: The Forbin Project" predates this event by 9 years.
2
@jaredgameplay2054 The French have won more battles than any other nation and also raised the Tricolor above Moscow, something the Nazis and the US never managed.

You see the rings in the water in some images? A hedgehog was like a mortar used against submarines, it would fire up to 20 projectiles into the air that would then fall in a circular pattern, each projectile containing an explosive and a trigger in the nose - if any of them landed on a sub they would explode. They were much more effective than depth charges as they could be fired in front of or to the side of a ship where the sonar has a much better chance of locating a submarine. They were only around for a decade or so as subs would soon be able to dive much deeper and the smaller charges of a hedgehog attack would barely dent the stronger hulls so although they made the depth charge obsolete the depth charge would later make them obsolete but they were very effective during the anti-submarine warfare of WW2.

I had heard somewhere that the fax was older than the phone but I never bothered to look it up but now I see where the bit of trivia comes from. Weird to think that something which only really became popular around 1980 was in fact invented more than a century earlier...

Also if you put something in the public domain it will spread far beyond one or two archive sites as enthusiasts download copies for themselves thus ensuring it's survival.

We couldn't spare the troops but we had battleships and cruisers patrolling Aussie waters and lost a lot of sailors doing so.
1
@jonathanperry8331 The Pacific is notoriously warmer than the Atlantic.
1
Better than to let Germany have them, we also sunk the French Atlantic Fleet. If someone doesn't have the good sense to wreck their hardware before it falls into enemy hands (as we did at Dunkirk) then we will wreck that hardware for you.
1
That and the white noise of being near a shipping lane.

As I recall one of Eisenhower's 'ideas' to quell such events from happening was to suggest that British pubs be segregated, to which Churchill reminded him that he had command of Britain's army but not the country. The race brawls became such a problem that Eisenhower tried to get the president to intervene and he told Eisenhower the same thing, perhaps Eisenhower should have told his troops back in America that black folk weren't 2nd class citizens in the UK.

@PD-we8vf I would assume that the International Atomic Energy Agency and Russia's own equivalent would keep an eye on what goes where, and I think the Russians wouldn't want to risk any material falling into the hands of Chechen rebels or any of Russia's other enemies in the Caucases since Moscow would be the target of any dirty bomb.
1
@quinnjim You might be a flight instructor, but the pilots of an actual flight who used the method trumps that. Also what you describe is centrifugal force, there is none of that in an aircraft travelling in a straight line at less than 1G..
1
When you said 'accidental' for a moment there I thought also of the 'accidental' Israeli attack on USS Liberty but the casualties there were 34.
1
The French didn't do much fighting, we told them to scuttle their boats or be sunk, firing on an ally was not our proudest moment but they refused to scuttle their fleet and we weren't going to let it fall into Hitler's grubby mitts.
1
@caw25sha I knew someone with a pay as you go rental where it went off if you didn't put 50p pieces in the top. This was in the 80's obviously when everything was 50p, gas, electricity, etc. If you ran out of 50p pieces you were shit out of luck - you could have ten grand in the bank but you would still be eating a cold supper if someone didn't go to a neighbour's house and ask for change.
1
@MeL-ho9eq That's just a link to the audio version of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corfu_Channel_incident Which states exactly what THG states, so what case are you on about?
1
Depends what you are into. Spending your only free time lying on a beach doing absolutely nothing is my idea of a hot, sticky nightmare and yet it's easily the #1 choice for most people. My ideal holiday would be a week somewhere wet, windy, muddy and full of animals like Nunavut in Canada or the Kola Peninsula in Russia, some place that reminds what my beloved Scotland was like before heatwaves and melted tarmac became the norm.
1
Which eye?
1
What on Earth are you talking about? How does a non-nuclear carrier leak anything nuclear?
1
If the plan was to start retiring the aircraft in 2011 and this happened in 2010 would it not have made more sense to just scrap this aircraft first instead of repairing it? Those odd Russians!
1
You never hear claims for the Spanish to return the trillions of dollars they stole from South America, probably because they melted it all down into gold bars.
1
You guys do now there's a report function? I just used it to make Homer vanish, he's in bigotland now.
1
"I'm not touching a cut n' shut, take your ship to another yard!"
1
Perhaps she's non-binary and it would be the History They?
1
"Uhh, Captain? I've picked something up on the hydrophone, could be our sub!" "What can you hear, son?" "For a second there it sounded like someone yelling the name 'Khan'..."
1
Not to mention that they never really needed them, they were on the same continent as the people they wanted to conquer (Russia).
1
The reactors have long since cooled down, it's frigid at the bottom of the ocean, perfect coolant for an uncontrolled reactor.
1
No 'Arf' or 'Ruff'? :D
1
Because it's a British themed episode would be my guess.
1
The number 9 is cursed, K-159 and K-429 have both sunk, one of them twice.
1
Revenge makes you no better than your enemy though, especially if aimed at innocents, if someone raped your daughter would you rape theirs in revenge? The US could have dropped Little Boy in Tokyo Bay where every general, politician and royal would have seen it's power firsthand and knew the Americans wielded a city destroyer, instead the Pentagon wanted to see what effect a nuke would have on real people and real buildings. The proof is in the thousands of pictures, film reels, samples and dosimeter readings that US scientists took of Hiroshima and Nagasaki within hours of occupying the country. That's just plain fucking evil.
1
The thumbs down could easily be from four-year olds who got this in their recommended while looking for cartoons. Anti-Americans and patriots are not the only two groups that use YouTube.
1
2066 will be some party, assuming we haven't become the 51st US state or a Chinese airbase.
1
The TV show The Durrells is about a British family living on Corfu in the 30's and the island looks like a mish mash of both cultures. Raisins everywhere!
1
Attempting to besiege the Roman fort. someone fetch some boiling oil!
1
They're just a bunch of pricks!
1
I wish I knew what "being P" meant, it must be something to do with God's country I suppose.
1
It is if you did not start it but managed to finish it. If these heroes had not done what they did most of the world would be living under a jackboot.
