  1. There is no problem with drinking during preganancy, just do not drink more than a couple of units at any time - stop before you get tipsy. Alcohol in blood does not harm the unborn baby, it is the change in brain chemistry that comes with intoxication that harms the baby by causing mother's blood pressure, temperature and heart rate to fluctuate. Smoking on the other hand is always bad, the CO2 in cigarette smoke displaces O2 at a time when mother is breathing for two people.
