  1.  @RCAvhstape  It's the contra-rotating props that cause the noise, even if the engines were of a much lower RPM they'd still be loud as hell because extreme noise is the biggest drawback of contra-rotating props where the second prop is churning up the air of the first prop. Top speeds that can rival a jet engine make up for the noise.

Long distance communication was no different to just telling your enemy what your plans were so they were eventually replaced by either direct encrypted comms using satellites or relay comms using lots of small stations dotted along the route, both of these are much harder for someone thousands of miles away to overhear.

That's sort of how the UK Last Resort protocol works, if our ballistic subs don't receive instructions at pre set times they come to launch depth and tune into the international broadcast of BBC Radio 4, if the station is still on air they go back down and await instructions, if it's not on air then it means London is gone and it's time for the captains to open their "letters of last resort". The letters are written by the current Prime Minister and contain instructions on what to do next, which can be anything from launching their missiles at a predetermined target to reporting to an ally such as the US or France to see where they would like the missiles to go.
