I remember when the US left RAF Edzell a few miles up the coast from me in 1996 they held a car boot sale (yard sale to you folks) to sell anything they couldn't take home to the US and every appliance on sale had a US plug on it. It seems that when the US goes abroad they decide "Right, let's burn all this local shit and create some America up in this bitch!" Think my dad bought (and subsequently rewired) a circular saw while I almost bought some NTSC games for the SNES.

The US is the home of capitalism and the NFL is based in America, it's not rocket science to imagine that the sport will be marketed all to hell with profit being the main motivator in all matters (I mean they call each team a franchise, ffs), sadly this disease of money over matter is spreading to Europe now as Stadiums start getting named "Frankie's Quality Goods Emporium" and moronic shit like that. Soon you won't be able to get into an EPL match unless you're wearing the new strip complete with giant foam glove and beer-drinking cap.

  5. We never colonised Hong Kong, it has always been 99% Han Chinese, we just administered it as a trading post. Asian nations never took kindly to westerners just going wherever we wanted (good on them I say) and so refused to trade with us unless we stayed on our ships, the Japanese made us do just that but the Chinese granted us an island to use. As for the opium wars, well, there's a lot of shit we're not proud of.

  6. In all fairness to the French, Belgians, Dutch, etc their colonies tended to fail because we either stole them or blockaded them until they starved. New York City was originally called New Amsterdam after all, and the Falkland islands which Argentina seem to think are theirs were 'liberated' from the French.

  7.  @Mr.Byrnes  It's exactly colonialism, rather than integrating with local culture the US sets up little American colonies so its soldiers don't have to experience any of the local culture. It explains why even some of those Americans who have travelled the world via the US military still know nothing about the world, which is something that has baffled non-Americans for eons.

  9.  @dutchpatriot17  No, it's the oldest mantra in recorded history - united we stand, divided we fall. The EU breaking up would make lots of people happy but the majority of them won't be Eurosceptics in europe, no the real parties will be held in the US and China and in emerging economies like Russia, India and Brazil because it's a lot easier to use and abuse a bunch of small economies than it is to get what you want from one giant economy.

Food is better on a sub because there are no windows, even if you are in the middle of nowhere being on a destroyer or carrier you can go up on deck from time to time, on a sub you are isolated from the topside for almost three months and even the hardest submariner will get dips in morale that only curry night can fix.

  21. If I was German I would not want a constant reminder of the 70 years Germany was under US occupation. The US has smaller bases in the UK and each time one closes we demolish it and return the land to British use.

I was talking about the fact that small nations get pushed around by larger ones, unless you think countries like Peru and Zanzibar are on a par with the US and China. The EU holds it's own against the US and China, the UK on the other hand will just be dictated to by them.

Compared to the US Russia is a saint, if you don't cowtow to American demands you get sanctions, tarrifs, your assets get frozen, basically every one of the 198 nations on the planet has to follow the US in single-file or you become ostracised. And the three nations that don't fall in line? "The axis of evil" That is bullying, the US doesn't even follow UN treaties any more, it just ratifies anything that is good for America and only America.

  32. When we Brits handed HK back to China it came with a 50 year autonomy guarantee so it's up to the people of HK who is allowed to use the islands. Which annoys the hell out of Beijing and is one of the reasons they are so eager to circumvent HK's autonomy. Though I believe it's just a naval refuelling station, if it contained US military personnel or weaponry then the Chinese would scream blue murder at the United Nations until it was removed.

It's good to see you support independence for the likes of Scotland and Catalonia, etc though.

Scotland has been in a union since before the USA existed, but we're not dead so that just destroys your argument. The EU is a union, the entity that will likely swallow up England in 2050 or 2060 won't be bringing it in to join a union, they will simply be taking it over. You can stick with your emotions, I'll stay with logic.
