The closest thing I can think of today would be Click on the BBC, I really enjoy that because like Micro Live and other shows of the 80's it too has knowledgeable hosts who don't feel the need to dumb down whatever they are discussing. A lot of shows today feel the need to try and be cool and funny like Top Gear when many people are looking for an informative show like Fifth Gear.

I think the OP must be deluded because every account of the 60's I've heard from Americans was that their parents were so terrified of nuclear war that they all built bomb shelters in their back yards, then there was the never ending delight that was Vietnam. Had 1969 not been such a momentous year I think most Americans of a certain age would rather forget the whole decade existed.

In the 80's cyberspace featured in so many movies and yet it still isn't here as of 2022, there are online VR rooms and VR games, but only when all of these different services start working together on a shared framework will we have anything close to true cyberspace - where you can just walk around on the internet from games to shopping to socialising in a giant digital world. OK, maybe closer to 30 years.

  25. Eidos, formerly Core Design, they made some fantastic games even before Tomb Raider. Curse of Enchantia, Heimdall, Chuck Rock, Rick Dangerous. They were one of the 90's heavyweights of the Amiga scene alongside DMA Design, Bitmap Brothers, Sensible Software and Team 17. When I was a teen I only knew two things about Derby, the football team that Brian Clough turned into giants and Core Design. Greetings from Dundee :)

They called it the Information Superhighway for a while but it didn't catch on so they then opted to calling it the World Wide Web as Tim Berners-Lee intended and eventually that was shortened to just The Web. By around 1999 most folks were back to just calling it the internet again since the web was just an evolutionary step in a thing that had existed since 1967 and had always been known as the internet.

  33. Vice City is set in the 80's when that sort of font and colour scheme was common, it's part of the retro style. Though seeing as GTA's creators have been known to pay homage to the shows they grew up with and they were originally a computer club in the early 80's I wouldn't be surprised if they were fans of Micro Live and based the Vice City logo on it.

  40. In the late 80's the Commodore Amiga and Atari ST were leaps and bounds ahead of other computers, even PCs and Apple Macs. Those two ruled the roost until the 90's when Windows 3 showed that PCs were the future and micro computers were the past.

SD cards were the futuristic thing for me, I remember when someone in the early 90's said you could fit an entire encyclopaedia on a CD (which Encarta later did), well now you can fit half a library on a 128GB microSD card smaller than a fingernail. A million or so books on an object small enough to get lost in your pocket or wallet.

Maybe Sega lost in the US but in Europe, or at least the UK, they far outsold Nintendo and were anything but a failure, though no console could compete with home computers like the C64 and Spectrum. When I was 10 I only knew three people who owned a console and all three owned Sega Master Systems. Then the next generation arrived a couple of years later and what few people in the UK owned a NES decided to buy a Sega Megadrive instead of the Super NES and Nintendo were gone. They did have a slight resurgence with the N64 though.

He and Tiff Needell did not get on very well because he thought that a car show should be full of "whoosh" and "wow" and things petrolheads enjoy while Tiff - who was there long before Jeremy - wanted to keep the show as a factual guide on good car tips and buying. Clarkson got permission to try some new ideas and the show evolved into more of an entertainment spectacle, that's when Tiff left, and because he was respected enough by the Beeb and because they still thought a factual car show had an audience they let him launch Fifth Gear. Tiff hates "Clarkson and co." as he call Jeremy, Hammond and May. James May has stated that he misses when he did factual car journalism but that "if you had a choice of earning 100k a year or a million, what would you choose?" Hammond is the puppy who loves being Clarkson's understudy and the fame while James is the one who was wrangled into Clarkson's world but enjoys the money.

A regular helicopter can be autorotated to the ground using the airflow over the main rotor to keep the tail rotor spinning, having the tail rotor means the helicopter can point in one direction ensuring enough air flows over the rotor to glide to the ground for a bumpy, but safe landing. If a coaxial helicopter loses engine power it tends to yaw to one side or the other and corkscrews to the ground much faster, this is the reason why coaxial helicopters either fly very low or they fit ejector seats that detach the rotors before launching the pilot(s) away from the craft. TLDR; If a Coaxial helicopter breaks your choices are either hitting the ground hard with the helicopter and breaking some bones or hitting the ground slightly less hard in your ejector seat and hopefully not breaking any bones.

  141.  @billfoster6479  Oh man, you would love Bottom. After the Young Ones came Filthy Rich & Catflap, and then after that came Bottom. Rik Mayall and Adrian Edmondson wrote all three shows. The show that Rik hinted at at the beginning of this interview when he said he and Adrian wanted to go in a new direction was Filthy Rich & Catflap, it starred Rik, Adrian and Nigel Planer (Neil from the Young Ones), so it was basically the Young Ones without Mike. Rik was a useless out of work actor called Rich, Nigel was his sleazy agent called Filthy and Adrian was his drunk and violent bodyguard called Catflap. It was decent but it wasn't the Young Ones. Rik and Adrian's biggest success came in 1991 when they also ditched Nigel and decided to write a show that featured only the two of them and it was a huge hit because it was just Rik and Adrian writing jokes for themselves, it was the Young Ones without Mike and Neil, and so they basically became drunk with power and created a show that pushed every boundary possible. In Bottom they play a pair of housemate losers on the lowest rung of the ladder, Rik is a neurotic virgin and Adrian is an alcoholic psychopath and the show is about them trying to get out of the gutter, a place where their particular sense of humour utterly shines. Bottom ran from 1991 to 1995 and then spawned a live show that toured the country and lasted for another five years, the live shows were out of this world because Rik and Adrian would forget their lines, break props, go off piste, and wrangle the audience into their insanity. I highly recommend you find the show and the live DVDs. Bottom also spawned a movie called Guest House Paradiso in 1999 where the two deadbeats try to run a hotel. You should probably try to get the movie too.

Unless you're on your way out you should see people on Mars, if Artemis 2 succeeds (an unmanned orbit of the moon later this year) then NASA plans to have people back on the moon in 2025 aboard Artemis 3, if this happens it will be a huge boost for the space industry, SpaceX already plan to have someone on Mars by 2030 via their Starship vehicle and Elon Musk has already said that the success of the Artemis missions could trigger a lot of investment in space travel, possibly rejuvenating it to 1960's levels.

Thanks to the inexpensive ZX Spectrums of the early 80's the 90's had an abundance of 20-something programmers who created some of the biggest games companies on the planet, DMA Design, Bitmap Brothers, Bullfrog, Core, Sensible Software, Team 17, etc. Many would go on to create franchises that still exist today like Tomb Raider and Grand Theft Auto.
