  2. If your city is besieged often then you would much prefer a circular city with spoke-like roads that all lead to a large central fortification so you could get inside when baddies came. The southern Europeans of Spain and Italy loved their gridded square cities with countless entrances and would mock French and English cities for looking like giant anthills, but they stopped mocking when they found out how difficult it is to get inside an anthill.
