  7. Interesting theory, possibly the girlfriend had a dangerous ex or maybe either of them were worried of losing custody of their kid to their exes. Though we know it can't be true because they found the bodies of the adults, but not the kids.

Death Valley has been recorded as the hottest location on Earth though, 50 degrees Celsius will dry you out and make you delirious very quickly and then a simple stumble or moment of lost concentration and suddenly every direction would look like the one you just came from. You would lose yourself.

  9. Exactly, it bugs me when people state how big the US is compared to Europe because Europe actually has more area than the US, we just don't have the large uninhabited expanses that they have, though I bet you could easily get lost in the deserts of Spain.

  11. There are several deserts in Europe, mostly in Spain and northern Italy (where all the "spaghetti westerns" were filmed), there's even a desert in Iceland...
