Anxiety, depression and drug/alcohol withdrawal are all caused by a low level of serotonin (the feel good chemical) and an upper like Xanax/Lorazepam or Prozac raises serotonin, hence why they are known as 'happy pills'. Things like heroin and booze make you feel happy in other ways, either via intoxication or through dopamine production and so your body stops producing serotonin while you are drunk/high, it reckons you don't need it. This is fine so long as you remain drunk or high but the problem is that the fluffy, warm effects of alcohol and drugs wear off quickly once you stop taking them whereas it can take your body almost a week to rebuild it's serotonin level back to normal, there in lies the land of cold turkey - because a low serotonin level puts your body in the fight-or-flight mode of cold sweats, paranoia and dread. This is why alcoholics or junkies trying to go straight (or not being able to find a fix) will temporarily settle for an upper, usually benzos like Lorazepam.
