One of the chemicals in Pyrex is illegal in the EU and it is one that American creators use as a costcutting measure. So over here in Britain their stuff is more expensive but also uses a compound that is far more resistant to temperature changes, sort of like a transparent ceramic. I think American Pyrex adopted the same formula not out of demand but to stay true to their motto of 'unbreakables'. Small price increase to retain a reputation. Oh, and the chemical used was not in any way dangerous, it was just created using an inefficient method, in the EU materials are banned from use if the creation process is deemed more harmful than the end product can justify.

I'm in Dundee, Scotland and it is 34 degrees C here, for the past 5 years we've had summers comparable with Spain's more moderate areas. The thing is that Mediterranean countries have air-con, but we don't, never needed it, I've got a fan in each room trying to circulate air.

Your eyes can pick up around 3,000-9,000 images every second depending on the part of the cone in use (we don't use two cameras, we use millions of them and they all have different timings), but your cognitive ability can only make sense of the most miniscule part of the wide field of view ahead of you. The human brain works in what we call real time, which is not in fact "the real time" but our own cognitive real time. The brain is fed constant imagery at a spectacular speed and makes sense of it in different ways for different things, flash up two images together and by 25-90 frames per second we will see the two images merge yet our brain is clearly seeing them flip back and forth, one after another in what would not even be blurry, it would be like one of Gav and Dan's videos, crystal clear. But only our brain sees it, not us. Again though, a few thou is a lot different to 100k+ These cameras are still faster than our amazing eyeballs. Amazeballs? I'll patent that. The human body is superfantastic, edge-of-tomorrow hardware, but the software it runs on (us lot, the human psyche, the bunch of electronic, chemical synapses that inhabit the squishy bit at the top) is slow and glitchy and only gets an upgrade every few hundred thousand years.

The bitrate depends on resolution too, the more frames per second the lower the resolution has to be because a 1080p image will take up X-amount of drive space each frame and with thousands each second eventually you are recording more data than any hardrive can handle so you have to lower the image resolution, this is why the crazy shots like 170,000fps to 340,000fps are very low and blurry. The Large Hadron Collider records about 75 terabytes of data per second during an experiment and requires three floors worth of the largest, fastest hard drives to record a 90 minute experiment. If Gav had the Phantom linked up to a room of harddrives he would not have to quickly hit the button on the camera each time to turn it on and off. but his electricity bill would be phenomenal and he'd have to be rich just to buy them all.

Gav is a video engineer for a studio, he borrows them. Don't ask me whether his employers make him pay insurance, haha :D

Recording at that speed would fill up a massive hard drive within a minute, so you have to quickly press record... then hit stop when it's done. 28,000 frames per second means 28,000 images saved to the hard drive in the time it takes to cough. and that happens every second for as long as you are recording. When they did 344,000 frames per second it is just mindblowing, you could literally burn out a hard drive by trying to put that many images on it each and every second. This is why Gav says that if they play back the 7 seconds they recorded at a normal speed (30 frames per second) it would be 19 hours long. A 7 second video used up 19 hours of drive space. That is why they need to be very quick pressing the buttons and also why the camera has big, noisy cooling fans attached to it. The hard drives in the camera would melt otherwise.

Yeah, as Matt said, I don't think they have any scientific qualifications because that is half the reason why they try stuff. They have daft curiosities just like the rest of us and try to do them without killing or maiming themselves. Dan is maimed occasionally.

They were never designed to work together so the formula jddebr gave you was an after thought that someone had to think up. Someone decided to create a formula that linked them, just because it would be useful. I do know why there is three systems though. Daniel Fahrenheit wanted a system to measure temperature so developed an aparatus that was zero degrees in his local sea and from that base number he went about recording the temperatures of everything and putting numbers to those temperatures. Later Anders Celsius, a proponent of the metric system wanted a system he thought to be universal so he used Fahrenheit's scale but changed his melting point of ice to zero and the boiling point of water to 100 and used those two as the basis for the new '100 system'. In the 1950's when we discovered that there is no such thing as a negative temperature, there is only a lack of temperature scientific experiments in vacuums showed that the absence of temperature is what would be considered -273 degrees celsius, so a scientist called Lord Kelvin defined that as zero degrees (or absolute zero) and calculated all other temperatures against it, the melting point of ice being 273 degrees K.

***** It is possible and it has been done, Spirit. Femto-photography, the act of seeing light as it travels. Light has a finite speed, it's just a ludicrous speed, but technology can get round that and allow you to see it in action.
