The English got surnames for the Domesday Book census, before that they didn't have surnames and would introduce themselves (if they were nobility) as "John of Nottingham" in a similar vein to other Germanic tribes on the European mainland but when the Domesday Book was being written you had to give your Christian name and your profession and this is how we came about with Smith, Carpenter, Tailor, Fisher, etc

  3. Supposedly Fraser is the anglicised version of a place in France called 'Frizzle' and is related to strawberries. Yeah, that's absurd enough to explain why we Scots adopted it as a surname.
