It does, damage to the head/brain, even mild damage like a concussion puts you in fight or flight initially until you can get a handle on the situation, when you get an unexpected smack over the head it could be because something fell off a high shelf or it could be a home invader, your brain instinctively prepares for the latter.

  3. Indeed, depending on the posture they either have a 1 in 3 chance of survival or 1 in 10, so those "No one was harmed" captions are usually just window dressing.
