  2. It is thermals they rely on, not wind. On a good sunny day there are pockets of cold air and pockets of warm air and if your glider has a doppler radar (to find warm air) or you are a seasoned glider pilot who knows where the updrafts are then that is how you stay in the air so long. A glider is perpetually falling since it has no engines to push it's flight surfaces through the air, but if you aim it towards patches of warm air then that convective air current lifts the glider without the need for engines. It's basically a game of jumping from one warm pocket of air to another to keep altitude.
