People in the 70's and 80's spoke like that, the first home computers were replacements for typewriters because writing was all you could do on them, that and a bit of accounting. In fact they were even known as word processors, which was just a fancy way of saying electronic typewriter.

It's like a jungle sometimes, it makes me wonder why I keep on going under.

It does blow my mind that this millennium is 18 years old already, in two years we will be one fifth of the way through the 21st century. Staggering.

Probably not too bad since this was the days before ISPs so the only variable to affect price was distance and if this was a Britain to Britain connection then it would be incredibly cheap just like chatting to a friend on the phone for a few hours. When the internet became the web in the early 90's and ISPs started springing up there was no pricing regulation at the time so they all offered horrible prices to get online.

He dialled into another computer, there was no web back then so you only had one connection at a time, if the BBS you were reading recommended another board you had to hang up and then dial into that one.

British Telecom could not afford to rewire the country for tone-dialling, we were still a debt-ridden country in the 80's, in 1984 most major cities still had bomb damage from a war that ended 39 years earlier and would not have the cash to start cleanup until 1997 when we paid off the last of our debt to the US. We were known as the sick child of Europe back then.

That is how the internet originally worked, up until the late 90's it relied on telephone lines rather than the cable TV lines that it does now. And so unlike cable (which is always on) you had to dial into your internet provider with a phone number.

2:26 "What do you use the computer for?" "Well, for keeping household records, such as what I have in the freezer...." Yep, fucking definitely Fred West. "After I've catalogued the freezer I'm going to list all of the people that are buried in the walls and beneath the floorboards."
