  1. Idle, put a load on it bringing it's surfaces in to heavier contact with one another and the engine on the left would have been glowing white and coming apart inside a day.

  2. I saw an automatic once as a child but my mum dragged me away from looking at it - supposedly folks started pelting it with stones and then later burned it as a warning to Americans not to bring their heresy to Europe.
