Actually the US did it twice in the same year (USS McCain and USS Fitzgerald), and once five years earlier (USS Porter) Arleigh Burke class destroyers have large cargo-vessel magnets in the bow that attract them to the locations of collisions. The reports on all three crashes are extremely enlightening as to the state of the Arleigh Burke fleet where broken equipment is so common that cannibalism of active vessels has been known to happen. Either USS McCain or USS Fitzgerald had no working radar on the ship (primary or backup) and had to navigate at all times using humans on watch, and when I say no radar I literally mean no radar, no targeting radar or tracking radar making the destroyer about as offensive and defensive as a fishing trawler.
