Its a fund everyone has contributed to, therefore everyone has a say.due to the sensitive nature of the proposed spending, giving foreign aid in this matter. The EU is a multi ethnic, multi cultural union & we all have relationships with nations from outside the EU that we value. The veto enables the member state Governments to protect the interests of the People who democratically elected them. There are sound legal & democratically principled reasons why Hungary & Poland shouldn't be allowed to vote on this or any matter while in its current position within the EU, namely refusing to abide by the rule of law which is a foundational principle of the EU & a fundamental requirement for membership within the EU. But to say that a veto shouldn't be required is naive at best. This is the democratic process in action.

@linusa2996 That is a plutocracy you are advocating, not a democracy. The way the EU Budget is set, the European Commission makes a proposal, it is then debated by the EU Parliament & the EU Council of Ministers. When the 3 are in agreement the proposal gets passed. In matters of a sensitive nature, such as in the case of giving foreign aid like in this matter, the Council of Ministers has to be in 100% agreement. The veto exists so that the national Governments of the member States can protect the interests of the People who elected them, its not only Hungary who has a veto. In principle it is democratically solid but in this matter given the situation where both Hungary & Poland have European Court rulings against them for failing to abide by the rule of law, I personally cant see a legal or moral principle for excluding them from the decision making process until such time they are in compliance with the EU Treaties they agreed to when they signed up for membership & have since then been a part of the amending & expansion of those treaties since their membership.

This report isnt about National Politics, it is about EU Politics, as such it is reporting upon the EU Budget. Within said report, nowhere did it claim that a national Government of an EU Member state is forbidden by EU Law to make a commitment through their own national Parliament to Ukraine. This report is about the EU Budget & when a proposal on how the funds of that budget are to be spent is made by the EU Commission, it is debated. When the matter being debated is of a sensitive nature such as giving foreign aid, all members of Council of the European Union (Ministers from the national governments of the member states) must all agree. Hungary is not the only country with a veto, ALL the member states have a veto on sensitive matters such as foreign aid, like the proposal to give Ukraine €18 Billion from the EU Budget. Its democracy, its not brutal, its not simplistic & it is why politicians get paid. As such, its another glowing example of how effective the EU democratic process is & how the Governments of the EU member states are able to protect the interests of the people who voted them into power.

But I assume once everyone has agreed to the treaties upon membership, that its in the rules that they cant cherry pick when & why they contribute to the EU budget. They either contribute or they dont & if they dont then they arent in the EU & have no say in the matter. If they are in the EU, there is a democratic process in which one EU body, the Commission, makes a proposal on how to spend the budget, that proposal then gets debated in 2 different chambers, the EU Parliament & the EU Council of Ministers. In this matter, the proposal to give Ukraine €18 billion from the EU Budget failed to pass the debate stage at the EU Council of Ministers. That is democracy in action, it doesn't always go exactly your way. If you dont like it & think you can improve upon it there are ways for you to make your thoughts & opinions known to the EU. Rob You are oversimplifying & in doing so you aren't taking his comment in context. The context is that Hungary is under suspicion of being a Russian Trojan Horse within the EU. Hungary has rulings against it from the EU Court of Justice regarding the Rule of Law Hungary is under disciplinary procedures by the European Commission for failing to abide by the EU Court of Justice rulings against it. Part of those proceedings is that Hungary may lose its voting rights within the EU if it continues to renege on its commitments to abide by the Treaties it agreed to upon joining & the Treaties it has helped create since joining. That is the context. Hungary is seen as a saboteur by the common man & nobody or institution is obliged under any code of conduct to tolerate a saboteur. " You must allow me to destroy your Union on behalf of its external enemies because you abide by Democratic principles & it would be undemocratic of you to defend your very existence " S T F U shithead.

However, I acknowledge that in the material world there are deadlines that MUST be met, issues cant be debated indefinitely & in the case of the EU, where 27 different cultures & Nations are collaborating we must respect each others minor differences & the veto currently in place in budgetary concerns is a case in point. Ordinarily, when war isnt happening on EUs doorstep it is of no major concern to the EU People that 27 nations have a veto on sensitive matters concerning budgetary expenditure & as such I have no major axe to grind with it, at this time.

@enibedmo Go on then, tell us how Putin can play with this so-called "Broken System" & how he is playing with it, because last time I checked EU member states like Poland & Germany were sending military hardware & weapons to Ukraine which is being used to kill Russians being commanded by PUTIN ! Silly old Putin eh ? Interfering with EU politics & getting Russians killed because of it, that game of his will end itself soon enough. To my knowledge the veto only exists within the Council of Ministers when dealing with budgetary matters of a sensitive nature, the example given is when giving foreign aid, which aid to Ukraine is. As for your 750 million Europeans, did you include Russias population in that ? The EU's population is closer to 450 million than 750 million & the answer is YES, in matters of a sensitive nature when budgetary expenditure is concerned, the Council of Ministers not only should but actually does ask for unanimity from 450 million EU citizens via the democratically elected representatives present at the negotiations who are current members of their own national Government & have been sent to the negotiations by their own President/democratically elected head of state.

@mywowaccount6099 Its only on matters of a sensitive nature like giving foreign aid, that the Council has to agree uniformly. In all other matters that I know of majority rules.
