So why did his father & to a lesser degree his uncle Rodger use the same "Philly shell" so heavily ?

@rollies5325 So a defense shell isnt a defensive shell when tha t'internet names it "Philly" which is when it somehow becomes an offensive defensive shell. I got it now. Thanks for yer genius level instruction.

@Cassius-m5v George Benton wasn't from Michigan n he made a career outa boxing outa that shell long before any of the Mayweathers did. Michigan has produced Tommy Hearns, Joe Louis & Sugar Ray Robinson. None of em used that shell unless very momentarily once upon a time, all 3 are all time greats & all 3 were known worldwide, that shell however was only ever famous for being used by journeymen who were out to survive a fight, not win it, just like Floyd Mayweather used it.

@Cassius-m5v Yer alright man, calm down. Point I wss making is tha point you have just made, the style/tactic doesn't belong to any one place or person. In yer defense, I can see why you might attribute it to Michigan, Mayweather Sr, James Toney & Mayweather jr are all Michigan n all used that shell very effectively. Sr & Toney using it to attack from, Jr using it to imitate a harmless punch bag from 😂.
