Once they declared war on the U.S. it was game over, not sure why your criteria for winning WWII is defeating the U.S. However, WWII could have happened without fighting the U.S. Could Japan have won WWII if they didn't drag the U.S. into the fray in '42? If they had fought on in China and SE Asia, was a victory possible? What if Japan ignored the U.S. embargo and instead 'recycled' and made better use of limited resources. Was a victory still possible?
