Andie Stringfellow not that much illegal but someone who fled military service in what was then Bavaria. When he tried to return as his wife's health was failing he was denied. The letter he wrote to the bavarian authorities is heartbreaking. The one that might have been an illegal Immigranten was 45's mother. And his wife number 3. Not going through 'official channels' was quite common at the time of 45's grandfather, by the way. When people claim their ancestors came to the US legally they assume that's what happened when their actual ancestors crossed the border 'under the radar'.
