Did Winston ever speak to an average voter though?

@frequentlycynical642 I know that landowners frequently did not have their sons educated past what they needed to know to run the estate. Education cost money and unless you felt the need for a son to join the clergy or become a lawyer what was the point of an education outside of a tutor that taught the basics? Especially of you were part of the Gentry and not titled (meaning entitled to a seat in the house of Lords). The rich riff-raff valued education far more. As did workers who founded, ran, and paid for subscription libraries. Even workers breaking their backs in mines and factories up north were known to attend lectures on a wide range of topics.

@tomriley5790 Doesn't disprove my point. Look at the history of libraries in the UK. Or how people shared papers in their neighbourhood. Social clubs too, who quite often held talks on a wide range of topics. Being keen to educate yourself does not mean that you suceed. And you know why they asked that question, don't you? Because they knew it would show the lower classes as ignorant. Asking someone with limited schooling about the head of the catholic church? In England? And 200 years ago they simply might have not understood the question due to people using different words even from town to town for common items and professions.

No, they were not. Where most of them baptised into a church? Yes. Did that inform their political doctrine and actions? To a limited amounted. Does that absolve the churches in Germany from their responsibility? No.

@tomriley5790 Oh, and if you walked up to me at work trying to be smart I would probably give you the same answer.

Reagan. The answer is Reagan.

@Alpha6.31 Yep.

@frequentlycynical642 you would be wrong in assuming that they were educated and well informed.
1
@frequentlycynical642 And I said that you assume they would have been - when there is little evidence for that.

That kid who is trying to make Nationalsozialismus a talking point to justify the need for christianity is... can I have some words with him? After he did the required reading? Using the Shoa and the other crimes of the Nazis as a Gotcha... that's Verharmlosung des Holocaust.
