They are desperate to not get it wrong. They do want to believe firmly so desperatly but what they feel they are supposed to believe in is so utterly vague that they have to stradle both options. Getting it wrong would prove that they are not special, chosen, blessed by (insert neo-god of choice)... and that is simply not possible.

Of only a president can hand over the presidency and they do firmly believe that JFK can do so... does that mean any president or just JFK? If it is any former president why does it have to be JFK and not the former republican president still alive? And if only JFK can do it because of 'divine right of Kings... sorry... president' that skips those that came after - doesn't that mean that all the presidents that came post JFK were not in fact president? Including Nixon, Reagan, Bush x2?
