As a german I would recommend starting of with Marx, having a wander over to the history of the SPD, taking that as a starting point to brush up on social democrats. Once you are done try and compare that to actual policies implemented in the US let's say prior to Nixon. FDR and his policies might be of interest to you. Happy reading.
