A virus that doesn't mutate is much more likely to kill, smallpox, polio and rabies for example, but these viruses can be vaccinated against because they don't mutate and a reliable vaccine will stop them. A virus that mutates will tend to evolve to one that is less virulent because it will have few life threatening symptoms and thus by not killing the host will spread more quickly. By virtue of this it also innoculates against the more virulent versions and the tide of dangerous infections is stopped. You cannot make a vaccine against a virus that mutates, the so called 'covid-19 vaccine' can't protect you but it can sterilise you, kill you or give you permanently life changing disabilities.
