There needs to be some (any) context for the legitimate desire of Americans not to be duped into another European war like they had been in 1916. Also, German-Americans in particular had a right to fear another wave of Germanophobic hysteria like had happened throughout the English-speaking during the previous war, and much of the informal sympathy for groups like this was driven by mid-Westerners' resentment of being dictated to by Anglo(-philic) Northeastern elites (sound familiar?). (Focusing solely on German nationalism and anti-Semitism is grossly misleading.)

@sjbaag The Amish can all speak English, maybe they were pulling your leg (anyway the "stereotypical German personality" is not the same thing as Prussian).

@mommafletch So-called Pennsylvania Dutch come more from what is now the German-speaking parts of Switzerland, I'd be surprised they were translators (you probably mean interpreters) do you have a reference for this? I think their language is kind of an archaic Alemannic dialect, analogous to the French spoken in Louisiana.
