  4.  @alexmoskowitz811  ships are basically physically limited by anchorages and facilities. There's no point in making a ship so big that you can't dock it any place. Or can't dry dock. Or can't fit under any Bridges. It's the same basic reasoning why ships are basically limited by things like the Panama Canal. For many years, ships were designed to fit the dimensions of the locks.
