@kennethhanks6712 Last recorded U Boat attack in the Gulf of Mexico; seems to be Sept 4,1942. They sank 56 ships from 1941 till then in the Gulf. One U-boat, U-166 is confirmed sunk and found. Overall, I think the risk is manageable after the "Happy Time." I'm just thinking that you would have more flight hours and better flight conditions operating out of Florida. That is why the primary Flight Training was moved down there.

Is that because the rest of us are on daylight savings time?

The naval nerds are now finally satisfied. They've been begging for this since channel day one. Seems like this program would have been better performed by having everything concentrated in Pensacola however.

@Primarch359 there were several submarines built by shipyards on the Great Lakes.

@IdleDrifter By September 1942, they've already sunk their last ship in the Gulf. Defenses are too strong. Air patrols are constant. The coasts are blacked out now. And Miami is hot bed of sub chasers and PC schools.

@vikkimcdonough6153 I think for most allied destroyers; your talking about trading firepower for eyes in the sky. Room needed for a aircraft catapult. Is going to mean giving up space for for weapon systems. Are you willing to sacrifice depth charge racks? Torpedo launchers? A dual purpose 5"or Etc ?

@johnmcmickle5685 if you are going to go through that much effort? You might as well just build a escort carrier from scratch.

@TheKencoffee S. S. (Steamship). M. V. (Motor Vessel). RM (Royal Mail Ship). H. M. S. (His Majesty's Ship) H.M.A.S.(His Majesty's Australian ship). U. S. S. (United States ship). A CVN, is a naval type designation. Aircraft carrier, nuclear powered.

@marlinstout4180 there is zero reason to try and modify or keep them. They are Surplus to requirements with a navy full of carriers.
1
@ericdueck9405 there is no worry about attacks on Lake Michigan.
1
@marlinstout4180 So you have just asked a question you already have the answer to?👏
1
@marlinstout4180 You are basically rewording the same thing. They have no value or use. And were already obsolete. They were already obsolete when they were put in commission. They were simply a stopgap measure of expediency. The technical factors you just mentioned. just reinforces you already know the answer.....
1
@marlinstout4180 there's no confusion. The answer was always the same.
1
@AkronCorfu he visited the ship like about a year ago. And have some videos on it.

@boomsssboom9804 You don't have the numbers of aircraft. Your talking about a handful of aircraft, not a squadron. And while you have people able to do tests and evaluation. You don't have manuals and replacement parts to be able to sustain a training program long term.
1
@willarth9186 you might have had interference with the Army Air Forces? Millville, New Jersey was a major training base for p-47 fighters. They likely did a lot of their training over the bay? Being a non-populated area.
1
@willarth9186 did you happen to catch the USS New Jersey move down river yesterday?
1
@willarth9186 yeah, there were some pretty good live streams yesterday...
