There's a lot to wrap up in that question. Safe to say that first technology changed rapidly over time. The Cold War threat was not a Soviet surface Navy. Large ships like this are terribly Manpower intensive a trend which we're going towards more Automation and smaller crew. And most of those missile conversions were not for anti-ship use.

Design Trends and Fashions change over time. Just like automobiles. You don't see Tail Fins or pop up Headlights anymore.

Generally, forward facing like a sub.
1
Probably just politics and a need to honor the new state of New Mexico.

I wish we had a cheap Congress. Today we're spending $4 billion on destroyers that don't do the job they were designed for.
1
@ChevelleSS-yr3gb the ships were built pretty much in secrecy. And there was limited human Intel in pre-war Japan.

🤔 Penny Pinching? I wish..... now we have a Navy Building 4 billion dollar Destroyers that don't do the job they were designed for.

@Knight6831 not sure what you mean? Battleship row was pretty much beaten up. Arizona is just special cuz her magazine went up. The rest were pretty sunk or damaged badly.
1
@Tdelliex biggest claim to fame? Sinking the Wilhelm Gustloff on January 30, 1945. And killing 6000 souls.

@lex0266 not effective at all. And put a large number of high explosives in your bow and was a flood risk.
1
@Underwaystudios nope....
1
@Karl Dubhe how do you mistakenly sink a Target?
1
@trevortrevortsr2 I'm sure they're plenty of folks in the ministry of Defense with ideas?
1
@Trekpanther that's pretty much the rule for the secondary people. Somebody has to be a stretcher Bearer. Somebody has to do damage control.
1
@leonhardtbelgar2468 basically not at all. There is no one for them to fight. They were already other plenty of battleships available. And they're too slow to operate with the carriers.
1
@mtgAzim it refers to muzzle diameter and barrel lengths. For example, the description: US Navy 16-in/50 Mark 7 Mod 0. Means that the gun was developed by the Navy of the United States of america, it has a board dimension of 16 in diameter. A barrel length of 16 * 50 inches long. And is the seventh version of The gun.

@travis5376 what do you mean by reaction?
1
@jonathanj8303 profitable? Greece is the crazy cat lady of naval ships. No , nobody ever makes money off sales to Greece.
1
@RupertFoulmouth the simple answer to your question is politics and the need to honor the new state of New Mexico. As to your longer question the naming conventions of ships is not particularly straightforward and has changed over time. Different classes of ship are named for different reasons.
1
@Karl Dubhe that's why they have practice ammunition.

Not the Sands anymore?
