The story of the 109 happens with the reformed Squadron 3. in the Solomon Islands a few months later. The Orginal unit was dissolved with the fall of the Philippines in April, 1942. So new unit, new location.

The M1917 Lewis gun was in 30-06 in USN and USMC use and made by Savage Arms.

Folks.... the name is John D. BULKELEY. Vice Admiral and awardee of the Medal of Honor. VADM. Bulkeley passed away April 6 1996 at age 84. He rests in Arlington Cemetery. The DDG-84 is named in his honor.

For firing, the tubes are hand cranked to a angle and ejected by a black power charge on top of the tube. Gyro on the torpedo then correct the angle to aim straight ahead.
5
@Kim-the-Dane-1952 Sour grapes are universal. As for the film, actually it is a team effort film. He is not the lead, Robert Montgomery is.....

Same dream.....

ALL were under the Command of Adm. Hart. CINC Asiatic fleet. That was basically all forces in China, the PI, and West Pacific. At the start of war, the Cruisers and DD's fled join the ABDA. Leaving only a token force of subs, PT Squadron 3, and assorted tenders and minesweepers.
4
The film is based on the book About PT Squadron 3.
4
@christophpoll784 That is "PT 109." The story of JFK in WW2.
3
@philipjooste9075 Fleet vs. Force? Minor word choice by Drach. And correct, the Cruisers and DD'S left the PI to join the ABDA as planned, after the start of war.

@Drachinifel On further review, the guns in question are M 1917 Lewis guns. These were made for USN and USMC service by Savage arms and are in caliber .30-06 Gov't. The M 1917 is basically the same as the earlier and more common Model 1913 and 1916 Built in the UK by BSA in the .303 service round. So basically Lewis guns in different calibers per nationality.

@colinsdad1 Great question, but better reserved for a in depth video on Fast Attack craft. A 76 mm was too heavy a weapon for the torpedo boats. It was used on larger Subchasers and PC's. By 1945 the standard PT load Elco or Higgins was a 37mm Cannon bow gun, 2 5" rocket launchers with 8 rounds. 2 twin .50 BMG turrets midship, 4 MK 13 Torpedoes in drop racks. And a 40mm Bofors aft. And smoke generator. Depth charges and Mortars up to 81mm and the 20mm Oerlikon were options. A few boats had a powered quad 20mm called the Elco Thunderbolt system.
3
Yes. The film is based on the story of Squadron 3.

On December 7th, the tanker USS Ramapo was in the Southeast Loch at Pearl Harbor. On cargo cradles were PT 27,29,30 and 42. PT 26 and 28 were being loaded as the attack occurred. Ramapo was to transport the second half of the unit to the Philippines. Instead they remained to become detailed to Squadron 1 and 2.

@DavidConnor Bravo, bravo.....🤗 Loved your reply to the resident "BB hater."
2
@havokvladimirovichstalinov Yes. The mains and secondary guns could engage different targets.

@colinsdad1 From the Book "U.S. Small Combatants" by Norman Friedman. "The rack was reportedly invented One Night in February 1943 by Lieutenant George Sprugel and Lieutenant (J.G) James Costigan of PT 188 who wanted a torpedo that can be rolled into the water rather than fired. At this time, Bureau of Ordnance considered the tube essential to prevent the standard torpedo gyro from tumbling, But airborne Torpedoes have been able to slide into the water. An experimental model was built at the New York Navy yard scrap shop, and P T 188 was tested with it at the Newport torpedo station with a mark 13. A bureau Ordnance officer witness the test, and MTB Squadron 12 was the first to be equipped with the new system. By August 1943, the standard approved PT Armament was four launch racks."- page 157......

@colinsdad1 PT armament is one the few examples of folks in the Pentagon, Actually listening to feedback from PT crews in field. As the boats got into action in the South, SW Pacific and Mediterranean ; the set ups were changed based upon the targets and threats faced. Some wanted a better AA defense. Others facing stopping barges found the targets too shallow draft to use torpedoes. They added more guns like the 37MM used in the P-39 Aircobra and the 40MM Bofors. In contrast, British MTB's and German S boats tend to be lighter armed...
2
@colinsdad1 The early mounts were. But a factory made mount was soon made for both Elco and Higgins boats.
2
A freighter with Davits to carry the boats as deck cargo. They had no built for the job tender.

@user-tp1bi6of3v bingo....
1
I would also note "Night Action" by Capt. Peter Dickens RN. Former CO. Of 21st. MTB Flotilla. And Great Grandson of the writer Charles Dickens.
1
@Drachinifel fingers crossed.... but you made my day finally. 😁
1
The spelling is Bulkeley, John D.
1
Bulkeley.....
1
@jlsperling1 When I referred to units "in China," yes that includes the Gunboats. As well as the rest of 4th MARINES. A number of which had not yet moved to the Philippines.
1
@philipjooste9075 Wrong... Bulkeley, John D. Vice Admiral USN.
1
VADM John D. Bulkeley USN.
1
John D. Bulkeley was a Vice Admiral. He died April 6, 1996.
1
@jlsperling1 Correct. I'm familiar with the Elco, Higgins and the trials PT's. Even better? JIMMY DEAN put the whole thing to song..... 😎 https://youtu.be/vADboJwbHCs

https://youtu.be/vADboJwbHCs Feel free to sing along....
1
@StanNoteboom It's a movie. Not a Ken Burns documentary on PBS.
1
@bkjeong4302 😖 seriously?
1
@charlieborsos7321 The answer is, your right. The M1917 Lewis gun was made by Savage Arms and made for the USMC & USN in Caliber. 30-06 Gov't.
1
@Dylan-lw1xc nope
1
@Halinspark You mean like, the US DD's to the RN deal?
1
@bkjeong4302 That is a function of the gunnery, not the gun platform. A 5" shell is still a 5 " shell. Fired by a DD or a BB.
1
@bkjeong4302 Not every target is worthy of a main gun shell. The Battleship has the flexibility to hit targets on the beach to 25 miles behind the lines. And unlike aircraft, they do a fire mission at night or bad weather. Airpower, still faced bad weather June 6th and cloud covered the bomb zones.
1
@bkjeong4302 Not when the aircraft are across the Channel 30mins away and sitting in fog.
1
@colinsdad1 Here is a quick history of the USN and the torpedo https://youtu.be/6Sl298P9-5Q
1
@colinsdad1 How about a film on the Mk 57 fire control? https://youtu.be/z_HUZSk8c2c
1
@piritskenyer (1) He does. (2) Make Cruiser into a tanker? How?🤔 (3 & 4) Makes no fiscal or strategic sense. Post war Britain is not going to re boiler Battleships. The Soviet threat is submarines. Not surface warfare vs. Capital ships.
1
@piritskenyer He answers questions, but that leaves little free time to work, research, make videos and etc.
1
Norbero Fontanez Was one made? There are films on Sub rescue and salvage. Not sure about that ship in particular.
1
@gyrene_asea4133 To be completely correct, yes. It's a tanker. I was trying to give a short reply. That should be the USS Ramapo. That was the ship transporting the PT's to Squadron 3. However they never arrived. The boats and crews were used to reinforce Squadron 1 and 2 instead.
