Cruisier and destroyers do the role cheaper, with less manpower. Plus you want a number of ships. A single large ship would not give a task force 360 degree protection.

And still useless... which is the bigger point.

Well, opinions are just opinions... Would it have made a difference? At Midway the command was split between the island defence and the 2 task force leaders. Once the planes launched, there is little a commander can do. So what is Halsey going to do different from Spruance or Fletcher?

Want accuracy? That is called a documentary film. Problem? Unless your Ken Burns and PBS, nobody watches or funds them. So for every "Tora Tora Tora," there will be a dozen "From here to Eterinty."

Quick answer.... No coaling underway. Coal bunkers were next to boiler rooms. Nearly all stoked by hand. Yes, ships post WW1 converted to oil. And lack of oil effected the choice of ships the USN sent to the UK in WW 1 to coal burners.

@ccrider5398 🤔....Coal fired? That sounds like bulk tranport carrier of coal. It seems odd to have a merchant ship using coal post 1930??
