That's probably a good description of the United States Navy for most of its history.

Well.... There is the soccer stadium. Or the prison. Or the very handy casino next door.

It is sad Eugene Ely has never gotten his due. The man who helped bring about modern Naval Aviation has never had a ship in his name.

It is one of my pet peeves. Also, that none of the Great Marine Corps Aviators have not even a destroyer? Where's the Joe Foss? Greg Boyington? Marion Carl???

Chester is barely a city. Not a place I would name a cruiser for.

Hmmmmmmm... 🤔 It's a tiny suburb of Philadelphia. A few minutes from the airport It did have a shipyard once upon a time. The biggest thing there now is a soccer stadium, a casino / racetrack, and state Prison. Mostly, it's a place you just drive by on i-95.

You know..... It would be absolutely great if the BBC actually would broadcast him. 📻

The Boeing helicopter factory is right up the road. Still making Ch-47 and V-22's. But it's a bit like Wilmington, Delaware. Some place you drive by, on your way someplace else....

used to be a lot of industry then. You had the shipyard. Lot of oil refineries. And today Boeing Helicopter is right outside city limits.

True. More remembered and thought about for Philadelphia. But, he did land near Chester.

Kinda really forgotten history. But, yeah. A lot more serious than what we saw in Los Angeles apparently.

Luckily, I've never had the pleasure of entering any of the 3.

Fashion trend? 💃

Sub launched aircraft. Rather than seaplane, use UAV. It would expand the recon reach of subs. It might eventually carry a helicopter or VSTOL plane.🚁 Or maybe that fantasy flying sub thing....

I don't think the waters there are particularly deep or cold? So probably subject to Marine Growth and decay.

It's just the era of rapid technological change. The Wright Brothers were state-of-the-art in 1903. Obsolete 10 years later.

Still, not exactly the first town you would think about to name a ship for in PA. I mean it's smaller than Allentown, Reading, Erie, Harrisburg, Etc....
1
Chester isn't even large by Pennsylvania standards. They were more Worthy towns to choose.
1
I'm sure no one at the prison or the casino thinks about that much...
1
Other cities did not get get cruiser names. There was no Harrisburg. No Reading. No Erie or Allentown. All larger and more significant.

@LeftVegas political favoritism? You might have something there.
