  2. Wasteful? You shouldn't be thinking about last war glories. And rather Cold War priority. The sinking of Saratoga and the rest of the ships serve a useful purpose. All obsolete, and no longer of any use in service. In 1946, this was the more important test then do any kind of preservation.

  3.  @schullerandreas556  Ships are not tanks.... the bulkheads and compartments along with active damage control cancels out your missile. You will make a hole and kill a few, but the ship is still fighting.

  5. The Nevada test site is the most nuked place on Earth. See anybody in Las Vegas dying ? Nagasaki and Hiroshima are functioning cities today. This damn ship has been in the ocean for 70 years... The dangerous levels are long gone.

  7.  @chandlerwhite8302  Ironically enough, I live in West Philly and have been to the yard a few times. Most are not rusting away though. Being a fresh water river, that's why the base was selected for the mothball fleet. Some like the sub they have, are on museum hold. Waiting for someone to restore them. Others like the DDG & FFG's will likely get sunk as target ships in a SinkEX.

  8. @robert rowe gun size and armor. In general, Light Crusiers had 6" main guns. Heavy Crusiers had 8" main guns. Battlecrusiers had guns near Battleship size, but with less armor.
