@christiancobb5309 First question? Chem and biological weapons. Most ships, except the British used enclosed bridges and main guns. Thus in battle, all water tight hatches and doors are shut. Ventilation systems can be reversed to blow away gases. Ships later have sprinkler systems to wash down, leftover bio or fallout materials. Last, ships can move. So they can turn and dodge any WW 1 gas attacks.... As for Nuclear gunnery? Yes, the USN R&D did develop nuclear warheads for Naval guns like the Army.

@jeroenmutsaars618 propeller guards. Think of them as built in fenders.

@Jurassic Aviator Depends on timming and location.......🤔 Japan, had a plan to have subs between Midway and Pearl Harbor. There was even a recon flight to be made to see what ships were in harbor. Of course, the plan failed due to US code breaking of radio traffic. So we prevented the recon flight by having a ship at the refueling point. The subs failed due to the fleet being at sea, before the subs were in place. Nor did the diversion attack on Dutch Harbor lead to a change in the fleet position.

@Gingerbreadley Quick answer? The Fleet Air Arm in Mid 1942 was flying a mix of Sea Hurricanes, Fulmars, and Martlets (F4F Wildcats) as fighters. And Fairey Swordfish or Albacores as strike and scouts. All would be easy kills for carrier Zero pilots. And ship AA defense would eat the rest. On the bright side? They would not waste a air wing like Hornet did at Midway. And the Armored Decks would have kept the carriers fighting. Would any planes come back land? That is iffy. The US won the battle by the dive bombers getting lucky on 3 carriers. The RN has no dive bombers. So the CV's survive. But due to planes available, the RN looses Midway on quality and numbers.
